Phonics & Reading Schemes

Phonics

Children at Broad Heath learn phonics using the Read, Write Inc Scheme. The skills and techniques are taught from Nursery to Year 2. However children who require further support get it in the form of intervention.

If you would like to learn phonics, we have a dedicated section made by one of our wonderful teachers. Click here

Reading

At  Broad Heath, children practise their reading skills by accessing a wide range of carefully selected, colour banded texts partnered with books within the RWI phonics scheme. These books match our RWI phonics scheme and encourage the children to read decodable and simple whole sentences. As children practise their phonics and segmenting /blending skills – they grow in confidence and fluency.

Reading progression is measured by comprehension, rather than word reading ability, ensuring that the children obtain a greater understanding and they are able to relate their own life/world experiences to the text.

Children are encouraged to read for pleasure and to regularly choose a book from our well stocked school library. If you would like to support your child further at home, you can sign up to Oxford Reading Owl where you will find lots of ebooks to explore and read.
