Year 5’s Rocket Fuel Investigation

This morning in Year 5, we investigated what made the best rocket fuel. We looked at a variety of containers (of different sizes), vitamin C tables, water and blu tack and asked to make a rocket. We experimented with the variables to see what effect this had on the height the rocket flew to.

These variables included:Β Using different size containers, using more solid or using more liquid (water).

Please answer the following questions:

  1. Rocket’s fuel investigation
    The variables we tested were bicabonate of soda and vinegar , vitimin C tablets and water, baking soda and water, baking soda and vinegar. We found out that vitamin C and water had the best reaction but it took longer for the balloon to grow . We also found out that baking soda and vinegar made the balloon grow quicker but it was smaller than the experimented between vitamin C and water. The effect that had on the hieght was because of the gas it produced. The reaction caused the lid to pop of then the gas pushed on the floor creating it to fly up. We changed the order of the bicabonate of soda and vinegar to first bicabonate of soda then vinegar. We changed this because we kept failing and it created more mess. I think shaking the contaner might make a difference because when you are shaking it , it mixes quicker and cause the reaction to happen faster.

  2. 1) The variables we tested were the size of the containers. Also the other things we tested were we mixed vinegar with bicarbonate soda and saw what happened then we done bicarbonate soda with water. Once we had done that we then tested baking powder with water and then vinegar with baking powder. Also when we had done this we had found out that the smaller the container the more higher the rocket will go. The affect this had ,had was that the smaller the rocket the more faster and the more higher the rocket will had gone. Also the affect this had, had on the rocket when it was launched that the water with the vitamin C tablets leaked from the container.

    2) The thing we changed was the size of the container.When we changed the size of the container we used some of the other things we had used. We had also usd the same amount of vitamin C tablets,the same amount of blue tak and also the same amount of water for each container.

    3) I think shaking the container would make a difference. I think this because the more gas inside the container the more higher the container might have went into the sky.

We used the Independent Variable as we changed the size of the containers.We also used the Dependent Variable as we used our observation skills to see what would happen to them.We found out that the smallest container worked the most as it went high up, whereas the middle one fell and landed on it’s side.The third and biggest one didn’t do anything because the liquid leaked out.When it was about to launch, the liquid was leaking out and then the lid shot into the sky really fast.

    If you would of shook it, I think it would have a difference as it fizzed up.I think it would of went even higher into the sky, but I do not think it would’ve went further away, just higher up.

    We tested bicarbonate soda with vinegar and water, baking soda and vinegar and water , and vitamin C tablet with water.

    2)What did we find out?
    We found out that the test with baking soda and vinegar was the best result of them all and had been tested successfully.We found out that vitamin c with water was the best to have velocity. We also found out that the size of the “rocket” is important as the smaller it is the best results you can get.

    This meant that the smaller the “rocket” the higher it will go.

  5. 1) What are the variables did we test?
    We tested the different liquids which are Bicarbonate soda and vinegar Baking soda and vinger and Vitamin C tablet.

  6. 1)we tested different sizes the bigger it got it did not explode only the smallest container exploed.We found out the smaller the rocket the higher it goes and it works the best.The smaller the container higher the container went and mad a really loud sound.
    2)When we changed the variables it did not work we only use a victims so when there was a lot of water in the container it exploded and when we changed the variables it did not exploed.
    3)I don’t think shacking the container will do anything because it will just stay in the ground and stay stationary and won’t move.The best expirement was when we done vinegar and baking powder because it had the most gas into the ballon,.

  7. The tests we did we’re Bicarbonate Soda and vinegar. When we did the rocket thing.We found out that there was to much gas trapped in the small cup. Then it popped of, and it like flew in the sky.

  8. The Variable we tested was vinegar,Bicarbonate soda,water,baking soda and Vitamin c.We found out that Baking soda and vinegar was about to explode.If I changed one variable I would put different liquid inside.

We tested vitamins tablets and baking soda and Biratnagar soda and the liquids were vinegar water and that’s all.we found out that the smaller the better.it had all sorts of efffects the big tin can was heavy so we needed more ⛽️ fuel and the small one trapped more air in so that is how it was the best imagine a rocket πŸš€ that small that had that much you would being flying.NO it would not make a difference because the shaking will make it not go up it might if it has lots of fizzzzzz

The variables we tested were 50 millilitres and the solid was the vitiman c tablet which is about 3 grams.The size of the container was very small. .we found out that the water turned orange the colour looked like tango and it even smelt like tango.The vitiman c tablet was a round circle and it was as small as a chewagam.The first time there was only 1 vitiman c tablet and there was more liquid than solid.Then we changed it and we put another vitiman c tablet and the water stayed the same so there was more vitiman c tablet.The rocket shot up and hit the ceiling.While that was happening than the liquid was leaking.The height was still the same.When we changed one we kept the rest the same this is because if we change more than one then it would not be a fair test so we only change one at a time.If you shake it than it would affect it because than the gas which is stored is going to be disappearing and it would start and the rocket would
    not be able to go up and the bubble which come out they will not come out. If a container is thin then the rocket would be able to go up mor quicker and faster whereas every if it is in a bigger container than it would take more longer to start of and it would be really slow. It would carry a lot of solid for a big container especially in a real rocket and a smaller container would carry less.

    The variables were , the amount of liquid , the amount of the solid and the size of the container. We found out when you put one vitamin c in the container ( small or fat) it turns yellow then orange then it reacting but there wasn’t much gas to let it lift off the table. The affect was that the smaller the container the easier it will lift off. When you change one of the variables you MUST Chang the others to be a fair test . Yes if you shake the container it will make a difference because it will lift off faster and have a fast speed.

  12. 1)The variables we used to do our investigation was the amount of liquid that was in the container.The amounts of baking pwder, vitamins C tablets and bicarbonate soda.The last variables we used was size of the container.We found out that when we put 1 vitamins C in the big and small containers it didn’t fly but there was a chemical reaction.Then we put 2 vitamins C the small container burst in the sky and it had a huge chemical reaction and when hit the roof and when it the table it was still having a chemical reaction.When we added one vitamin C in the small container it had a chemical reaction but it didn’t fly.But when we put two vitamins C in the small container it flew high in the class and hit the roof then when it hit the table it still had a chemical reaction.I think this happened because when we put one vitamin C it didn’t have enough gas but we put two vitamins C it had more than enough gas.

    2)When we changed the liquid which was vinegar to water we changed the solid to bicarbonate soda to baking soda.

    3)I think shaking the container will make different because when you shake a fizzy drink all of the gas finishes so I think that will happen to the container too.Then it would fly very high.

  13. 1)The variables we tested were amount of liquid,amount of solid and size of container.we found out two vitamin c tablets,baking powder and water in a small cup makes the cup boost up into the air.when we put two vitamin c tablets in it took of into the air.the more gas means the gas will push up and it will lift of.

    2)when we change a variable we do the same with the others.We did this to make it a fair test.

    3)yes i do think the shaking of the container would make it faster because the bubbles would rappidly apear and it would push the cup up faster.

The variables we tested were amount of liquid ,amount of solid and the differnt sizes of containers .we found out that when you put 1 vitamin c in the containers (big and small) it turns orange and it reacted but there wasn’t a lot of gas for it to lift of . The effect was that the small container was the fastest and it will lift of as there is more gas and for the big container there was a lot of space . When you change one of the variables you have to change the other so it is a fair test and a fair test is when you do everything equally . Yes shaking the container would make a difference because the container will lift of quicker and with a lot of speed in it .

    2.We found out that if you use one tablet it won’t blast up however if you use two tablets it will blast up and it created fizz in the tub.
    3.The height of the rocket was very far.
    4.I think the two tablets was better because it had more gas than the one tablet one.
    5.I think if you change something it would not be a fair test.
    6.I think yes because if you shake it more fizz will come out and will still go very far.

  18. The variables we used water πŸ’¦ ,vinegar,backing powder 🍚 and bicarbonate soda.
    We found out how to make a container shoot in the air with any type of container or box and vitamin c.
    If you had more vitamin C’s it would go higher but it would take a long time this is because a vitamin C tablet has more fizz than other vitamin.

    The effect it had was if there was 1 vitamin C tablet it would not of went.

    I think this because there was more fizz needed

  19. The variable that we tested were the amounts of solid ,the amount of liquid and the size of container.We found out that the less water was better and the more solid was also better. This meant that there will be enough gas to make the container lift up in the air and there would also be enough fizz to make it go the furthest and the highest possible.The most reasonable explanation I can get is that the solid is the substance that makes the actual liquid to fizz up.The other explanation is that the water is not fizzy and does not have anything inside it that would make something fizz up.This means that adding the same amount is the solid and liquid will make a reaction but will not allow the container to go up in the air.

    When you change one variable you have to keep the rest of it the same because you want the fairest test possible.I think changing the container would make a difference because it would cause the reaction to happen faster leading it to a better chance of just fizzing up.I also think it would make a difference as it old want to make a reaction naturally making it fizz up.

  20. The variables that we tested were the vitamins c the size of the container and water. And we also found out that the smaller the container then the higher the rocket will go if we used a big container then it will only fall. We also found out that when we put more vitamins in then it will go higher. We changed the amount of liquid and vitamins so when we put in more the rocket when higher at first it didn’t do anything. We changed the amount of water and vitamins but leaft the vinegar this is because the amount of vinegar was ok. Yes shaking the container would make a difference because if you shake it it will fizz up and more gas will be produced and it will make a change to the rocket by making it go higher…

    1)The variables we tested were the shape of the container,how much water did we use,how bid was the container.We found out the more gas you have which was in the vitamin C tablet the more gas you use and the height is bigger.I can explain this because the gas is in the vitamin C tablets so the more tablet you use the more gas there is which makes you go higher.

    2)We changed the container to a bigger container,we reduced the liquid from a larger amount of water to a smaller amount of water.Because we all thought the less water the more gas would produce because there is less for the tablet to deal with.

    3)I think shaking the container would make a difference because the more you shake the bottle the particles of the vitamin C tablet would move around and make a bigger fizz which makes mor gas.By shaking the bottle in a real life scientist lab it would make a massive affect on the fair test and results because then the accuracy would be wrong.

  22. The variables we tested are the amount of liquid, the amount of water and the amount of the tablets. We found out if you only have one vitamin c tablet then it will just leak if you have a big container and little container however if you add two tablets in the little container it will blast because the vitamin c tablets melt quite quickly and has more fizz so that’s why it blasted. The height of the rocket launch was that it blasted up and hit the roof and then it went to the book corner.

    When we changed the amount of the vitamin c tablets so we had two then it blasted quickly and we left the other variables the same so it is a fair test.I think if you shake the container then the fizz will blast quickly. Also the fizz will pop and blast if you open it or if you have not put the lid on properly.

    We found out in order to create a reaction that would create the fuel was to add less water and more solid. The effect it had is that solid is the main fuel needed so if we have what we are calling the solid ,more of it, that produces the gas and less of the water we could create more gas and air yet still with less fuel or ingredients needed. We could change these variables if we were looking at if different types of solid that would be used to create the fuel such as bicarbonate soda or baking powder. With the rest of the variables we need to keep the Sam in order to create a fair test. Shaking the container would make a difference because if we shook it the gas would bubble more and create a higher amount of reaction. Also the water would properly mix the substances together. Furthermore the shake will add more of the water to spill too.

  24. Adding 1 vitamin c tablet made it fizzy and it devolved into orange water and it made a gas which when you add 2 vitamin c it popped and I got scared it hit the roof and bounced to never to be seen again

The variables we tested were bicarbonate soda, vinegar,water, bicarbonate soda,water,baking powder,baking powder and vinegar.We found out that baking powder was more successful because the balloon was inflating as quick as it could and it made a huge reaction.When we changed the amount of tablets,we changed the amount of liquid as well to make it a fair test.I think that shaking the container would make a difference because when you shake the container, you will produce more gas.

The variables we tested were the amount of liquid amount of solid and the size of the container.We found out that baking powder into vinegar made the most gas and fizz.the effect is if you shakes the bottle it would fizz more and make more gas because your shaking it and if you didn’t shake it you wouldn’t have all the gas wheras if you did shake it all the gas would rise.when we changed one of the variables we left the others the same because we made it a fair test.

    The variables we changed were the size of the container , the amount of liquid, amount of solid. The affect it had when we changed the size of the container was when we had the biggest container it did not launch however the water did leak and it made a very narrow noise. On the other hand when we used the smaller container it had a larger reaction , at first it started leaking , next it fizzed and gurgled but suddenly it started flying and hit the roof. After one or two investigations we decided to use two tablets instead of one as well as also using the smaller jar. This made a huge impact. We changed three variables and they were the amount of water as we changed in the jar , size of jar and the amount of tablets. I think shaking the container perhaps might make a difference and the Vitamin C tablet might dissolve quicker so it will launch quicker.

    we found out that less water and 2 vitamin c but when we added more water and 1 vitamin c it just leaked
    First it leaked aliterate than it bubbled and quick as flashed exploded it exploded because there was less water and the 2 vitamins made it explode and not one vitamin.
    2)Mabye it might not explode because the vitamin c is more powerful than the others
    3)Yes because the vitamin c would mix with the water faster.

  29. we did the vitamin d tablets we found out that in the big container we used 1tablets and the same amount of water and nothing happens it just started fizzing up then we tried again using a smaller container 2tablets and we deacreased the water and it worked.if it is a bigger container it is harder to launch because it has more wait were as a smaller container it is easyer to launch because it doesn’t way that much.when we changed one variable kept the others the same or deacreased it.i think shaking it neurodevelopmentalold of made a difference because it would start going foamy very quickly and it would probably start fizzing up.

  30. 1.The variables we tested were c vitamin tablets.We found out that when we used only one tablet the container it didn’t flew but when we put two tablets it flew in the air,so that means only one tablet doesn’t have enough power to make the container fly.The effect that it changed was that when we put only one tablet it didn’t have enough power to make the container fly but when we put two it flew.So if you wanted to make a container fly with c vitamin tablets make sure you use two instead of one oather whisk it will not fly at all.

    2.So if you were to change the variables you would just put the other one in the side because let’s say something interesting happened and you wanted to film it you couldn’t because then you wouldn’t have the variables you need.And this is because let’s say you told you friend what you’ve done maybe he wouldn’t believe you because you don’t have any evidence.

    3.I thing it would help is you’d shaked it it will give more pressure the container will fly even more than it will and that will be even better and even more interesting.Because when something takes place and it’s even better than you thought it will be its more interesting.

This made the rocket go further up. When you change 1of the variables you leave the others the same because you will then find out the different.     1. The variables we tested where,the amount of liquids,the amount of solids and the size of the container.we found out that the amount of solids (which were vitamin c) made a difference because when we put 1 vitamin in it didn’t do anything,but when we increased the amount of vitamins to 2 it lifted off.also the roles when higher then I thought when it shot off it touched the ceiling then went down nearer to the right side of the classroom.

    2. When we changed the variables the whole thing change the reason why is because when we changed the solid the whole thing changed and it chit of but when we changed the amount of liquid it changed how fast an further it shot.

    3. I think shaking the container would make a difference,because it would MIX together a bit better and I think it would have popped of the lid quicker.

The variables that we tested where the amount of liquid that we put in the containers and the amount of solid that we put in the container which was the vitamin c and we changed the size of the container for out rocket test. We found out that the smaller the container the more gas it will catch and I found out that for the bigger container if you put 2 vitamin c in it,it will create more gas. The effect on this was that the rocket actually flew in the air and created more gas. When I changed the variables, I cept the other variables the same to so it is a fair test and so we get a good reaction. I think shaking the container would make a difference because if you shake it the fizz will run out quickly.

  34. What are the variables? The variables are amount of liquid ,size of the containers and how many vitamin C because if we did not know the size of container, amount of water and how much vitamins we needed to put this test would not would have been a fair test at all.
    What did we found out? We found out at the end that we need a small container lesser water and more vitamins (two vitamins) so we had a fair test after all at the end.What effect did this have on the height of the rocket after launch? It was a fair test after launch it was a good fair test.
    When you change one of the variables what did you do with the others and why is this?we did the opposite for example”there was first more water then we decreased some water.

    I don’t think it would make a difference if you shake it

  35. We tested the with the containers and we changed the different solids and liquids. We found out that the more gas you put the bigger chance you can make lift off we put two vitamin c tablets in the small container. It changed because of the solid which was the vitamin c tablet it created more gas so it had lift off.we changed the solids and liquids and the size of the container because we wanted to test which one will lift of first and we changed the amount of water if it lift off faster. Yes because it’ll make it fizzy.

  36. (2)We tested baycarbonatesoda into vinegar
    We found out that the balloon had infaluted with gas.the affect was that the gas was not enough, and it didn’t go up and touched the ceiling because it did not work because we only put one tablet in. When we changed it we started to improve a bit because the first one it didn’t go out well. No you should not shackle it because the fizz will go away and it might no go up to.
    We changed the all the ingredients into water and baking powder the balllon filled up and the 🎈 started to go up and the fizz went in the balloon.

    Fizzy things go exploding out if you shake it so shaking it will make it go faster
    And higher outside.

    We found out that it depended if you changed how much liquid the better and more solid the better. The effect of the height is that is how high it would go up to so you might need to make sure wherever you are you stay there because it won’t be fair test then.
    If you change one variable you have to do that to the others because it is more fair and then the changes you make you can estimate further if they didn’t work for you. I think shaking the container would make a difference because the liquid would go on the solid more and might be more ready to lift off than before. (Doing it normal)
