To understand Lord Leofric’s actions and what happened as a result

What can you remember about Lady Godiva and Lord Leofric?

Let’s remind ourselves of the story. Read below.

If you could talk to Lord Leofric, what would you say?

Caterpillars – I would like you to write some adjectives to describe Lord Leofric. Can you finish my sentences? Lord Leofric is ………….. Lady Godiva is …………….

Butterflies and Bees – Write a sentence to Lord Leofric explaining how you feel about paying taxes to him. Use this sentence starter and then try and write a sentence of your own. Lord Leofric, I feel it is unfair to give you all our money because ……………………

Ladybirds and Spiders – I would like you to write a short letter to Lord Leofric, explaining how you feel about paying taxes. Below is a letter I have written as an example. Use the word bank and the sentence openers below my letter to help you.

Dear Lord Leofric,

I am writing to you because I want to complain about all the taxes you are taking from the poor people who can’t afford it. How would you feel if you were made to give all of your hard earned money to a rich person?

Firsty, I do not understand why we are paying for King Canute. He is a Danish King and a very rich man. He doesn’t need our money.

Secondly, I only earn enough money to look after my own family and I don’t have any money left over to give to you. My family have to go without food if I pay you my taxes.Β

Finally, I think it is about time that you listened to your kind, generous wife, Lady Godiva, who also thinks that the taxes are unfair.Β

Yours sincerely

I would tell Leofric that what he did is wrong and he shouldn’t do it and listen to his wife.

    CATERPILLARS
Lord Leofric was a really mean man and a bully to the Coventry and Lady Godiva is really kind to help everyone even if it meant to embarrass herself.

    my sister helped with this!

Dear lord Leofric I am writing you this letter as I am very unhappy with your greed for taking tax from the helpless people of coventry. This is very cruel and unfair to the poor. Why would you need to collect tax money from the poor helpless people. You are taking advantage of your role being a lord just to pay for the kings bodyguards.
Firstly it is wrong to collect money from poor people this is unjust and a awful thing to do. I would like to request that you end this cruelty immediately so they can feed their family.
Secondly this is not justice and unfair to challenge your wife Lady Godiva to go around the town naked for you to end this because you know that she loved Coventry and the people of Coventry.
Third the Danish King Canute is very wealthy and rich and can pay for his own bodyguards.

    Dear Lord Leofric,
I am writing to you because of what you have done to everyone and because you are cruel and also this is really bad what you do.
First of all, why did you make everyone including the poor people pay you? The poor people cannot afford anything because they only have a little amount of money all year long and you were charging them! That was definitely very cruel of you to have done that.
Secondly, why did you control the church? If you didn’t boss the people around they would have been fine! The people were only trying to pray for their people who sadly died/passed away. That is very cruel as well.
Finally, why did you make Lady Godiva take all her clothes off and be naked? That is mostly very dirty and very cruel as well.
    Yours sincerely,
    Ibrahim

Please read back through your letter to make sure it makes sense Markuss. Well done for using appropriate time connectives and asking questions.
What does the work unjust mean? Maybe other children could use it in their work, if they know the meaning.

      1. Markuss B.

I learnt what unjust means yesterday. Unjust means unfair or not right.

    Ladybirds and Spiders.
    Dear Lord Leofric,
I am writing to you about the cruel taxes you have been collecting from the helpless people of Coventry.

Firstly, I am appealing to you to consider this unjust and dreadful behaviour . Everyone is angry at you so I think you stop demanding taxes from us immediately.

Secondly, I work hard enough to cater for my family and also have lots of bill’s to pay for, therefore it is absolutely difficult to pay this tax.

Finally, I think King Canute doesn’t need a bodyguard so he can sack all his bodyguards and people will not have to pay taxes again.

    Yours sincerely,
