2016-17 Football Review

As the football season enters it’s final stages,it is appropriate that we update everybody as to how our season has progressed so far.

Trials were held in September for everybody in Years 5 & 6and from this Mr Burgess selected 21 boys to form the A and B squads for the season.

Training has taken place every Tuesday after school and our first outing was to try and defend the Harry Shaw Cup which we won last year. Our opponents in the first round were Clifford Bridge but unfortunately we lost the match and went into the Plate competition where we played Eastern Green. This was an entertaining game and although we lost Keiren Spicer had the privilige of scoring our first goal of the season.

We then turned our attention to a challenge from our close neighbours Stanton Bridge, where 2 games were organised which was to see both our A teams and B teams to play each other. The A team game was first and saw Broad Heath win easily 4 – 2.The next week our B team showed up only to find we were playing their A team. Our B team players can consider themselves to be very unlucky in losing the match by 1 goal.

Since then we have been concentrating on the league and although we have lost both games so far against Parkgate and Whitmore Park it has not been through a lack of effort. We have one more league game to play against John Gulson which should be played in the next few weeks.

All 21 players in the football squad have represented the school in at least one game this season and although the results have not gone our way some very good football has been played under the leadership of the team captain Anton Smith.
