To understand Lord Leofric’s actions and what happened as a result

What can you remember about Lady Godiva and Lord Leofric?

Let’s remind ourselves of the story. Read below.

If you could talk to Lord Leofric, what would you say?

Caterpillars – I would like you to write some adjectives to describe Lord Leofric. Can you finish my sentences? Lord Leofric is ………….. Lady Godiva is …………….

Butterflies and Bees – Write a sentence to Lord Leofric explaining how you feel about paying taxes to him. Use this sentence starter and then try and write a sentence of your own. Lord Leofric, I feel it is unfair to give you all our money because ……………………

Ladybirds and Spiders – I would like you to write a short letter to Lord Leofric, explaining how you feel about paying taxes. Below is a letter I have written as an example. Use the word bank and the sentence openers below my letter to help you.

Dear Lord Leofric,

I am writing to you because I want to complain about all the taxes you are taking from the poor people who can’t afford it. How would you feel if you were made to give all of your hard earned money to a rich person?

Firsty, I do not understand why we are paying for King Canute. He is a Danish King and a very rich man. He doesn’t need our money.

Secondly, I only earn enough money to look after my own family and I don’t have any money left over to give to you. My family have to go without food if I pay you my taxes.

Finally, I think it is about time that you listened to your kind, generous wife, Lady Godiva, who also thinks that the taxes are unfair.

Yours sincerely

L Penavega

  1. Dear Lord Leofric,
I am writing to you because I want to complain about out tax system, it is completely unfair as the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. A lot of people are out of work yet still paying taxes and barely have enough money for food. We need a system that is fair on all and maybe instead of giving the money to the Danish king putting the money back into the community ie new roads buildings, I am sure your good wife Lady Godiva agrees.
    Yours sincerely
    Ramarni.

    • Hi Zeyd. A great try. Look at your first sentence please. …. you pay taxes to people. I think you have got a bit mixed up here, perhaps it should say you make people pay taxes. Look carefully at your sentences too.

  8. Dear lord leofric

I am writing to you because you are being mean to people and selfish. Firstly you are making fun of the church. Secondly you send taxes from people.
I demand you stop people from paying taxes all you care about being rich and because you only care about that you don’t care for the poor.
People are suffering because of you and are very hungry.
They can’t even afford drinks, food and a home. Finally you asked your wife to ride naked on a horse. What kind of person are you? What you do is very unjust, even your own wife does not agree. Why can’t you just be honest and care for people for once.
    Yours sincerely
    Caleb

    • Wow Caleb. A great letter! It would certainly persuade me. Good boy. I can see that you are reading your work through and using the word bank. Well done. Check your secondly sentence. Did you mean take instead of send? A great job though. You should be proud.

  9. Dear Lord Leofric,

I am writing to you because I want to complain about all the taxes you are taking from the poor, helpless people of Coventry. This is an awful, disgrace way to gain more fortune.
Firstly, we barely can afford our dreadful, hopeless living, feed our children and left small savings for our future.
Secondly, it is completely unfair to demand taxes from us because you can buy whatever you want, but we can’t.
Finally, stop being greedy, cruel man, be mercy, generous like your wife, Lady Godiva.
    yours sincerely
    Kenan El-issa

    • Hi Kenan. This is a great try. You have used fantastic language from the word bank. Well done. I can spot a few mistakes. disgrace – disgraceful, mercy – merciful. Read you sentence again that begins with firstly; can you improve it? I am so proud of your efforts Kenan.

  10. Dear Lord Leofric,
I am writing to you because I’m not giving you any of my money and were going to be poor without any food.
Firstly,I don’t understand why you want us to pay taxes and then you keep that money all for yourself you could even give some to charity or an orphanage even you can give it to hospitals.
Secondly,If you take all my money what will my family have and even if they go to work that isn’t there money it’s the persons money who gives it.
Finally, why do we still pay taxes? I wonder.
    Yours sincerely

    • I am loving the content of your letter Hanfaa. Can you check your sentences and punctuation please? When you write a question, what do you need at the end of it? How many ‘ands’ in a sentence?

Secondly,If you take all my money what will my family have and even if they go to work that isn’t there money it’s the persons money who gives it.

Secondly, if you take all the money, what will my family have?

Can you write the second part of this as a new sentence please?

      • I agree with Mrs Penavega, this letter is great Hanfaa.
However, you must read you work back to make sure you haven’t missed any punctuation or to see if you could make any amendments to improve your work.
Keep up the good work, we are so proud of you.

    • Hi Aarav,
A good try but could you check through your letter….
I have noticed a few mistakes… Can you spot them?
      e.g.
What do you need to put at the end of a question?
      .
Which of the following sentences is accurate?
      1. I am writing to you because I‘ve a complain about the taxes that we pay.
      2. I am writing to you because I have a complaint about the taxes that we pay.
      .
Can you see if you can extend your sentences to improve them further.

  12. Dear Lord Leofric,

I am writing to you because I want to complain about you taking taxes of the poor, helpless people of Coventry. Why are you being so cruel and greedy?

Firsty, the king is very rich and he does not need some more money of these poor people so why can’t you be like your wife the brave, kind lady Gadiva?

Secondly, when you take all my money I won’t have any money left for my family so stop being so mean and selfish and stop taking taxes of the poor people of Coventry immediately.

Finally, I hope that you be kind and honest with everyone.

    Yours sincerely
    Ameen Khan
