Hi Year 2!
I hope you have all had a fantastic break and you are now back with your brains switched on!
Normally, if we were at school, we would use Entrepreneur Week to prepare our stalls for the Summer Fair. Unfortunately, this will not go ahead this year SO we have a fun home learning project for you instead!
The pink sentences (like this one) explain the 3 tasks we would like you to complete.
An entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business to sell something in the hope of making money. It can be risky and things might not work… but if it is successful you could become very rich!
There are many entrepreneurs in the world but you may know some of them already! The CADBURY brothers? Henry FORD? J.K Rowling? Jamie Oliver? Walt DISNEY?
We are going to learn about this man here…. Levi Roots. He is a famous entrepreneur and he once visited Broad Heath! How amazing is that?!
Levi’s story begins in a tiny little village in Jamaica. As a young boy, Levi helped his grandmother in the kitchen. She taught him the secrets of mixing Caribbean flavours, herbs and spices. During this time, Levi also discovered his love for music at the church his grandmother sung at.
He then moved to London, England to join the rest of his family. When he grew older, he invented his own sauce called ‘Reggae Reggae Sauce’ which he began to sell to other people. However, banks and businesses wouldn’t invest in his sauce as they thought it would be successful or make much money.
In 2006, Levi went on to a TV show called Dragons Den. He had to present his Reggae Reggae sauce and see if any of the millionaire judges would help him to create a business. Two of them loved his sauce and helped him to ask Sainsburys to sell it. What an amazing achievement!
Since then he has created more cooking sauces, ready meals, soft drinks and desserts. Restaurants across the country feature his sauce on their menus. He has had his own cooking show on TV! He has created his own music album! He has toured around schools, inspiring them to follow their dreams and showing them how to make tasty, healthy food. He has published six cookbooks AND opened his own Caribbean restaurant.
Levi Roots is a man who had an idea, took a risk and made lots of money as a result! He is an extremely successful business man due to his hard-work, resilience and tenacity!
CHALLENGE 1: If you could own your own business, what would you make or sell? Why? Comment on the blog to tell us.
This week, we are going to have our OWN version of Dragons Den. You will be designing and making your OWN product. The Year 2 teachers are the ‘Dragons’ who will judge the best product.
We are going to base our products on the current symbol which shows thanks to our NHS – the rainbow.
CHALLENGE 2 – Your task today is to use the internet to research existing rainbow products. What are people already selling? How much do these things cost? Which do you like best and why? You could use the PicCollage app to display your findings and send it to Y2upload@broadheath.coventry.sch.uk
Here is my example…
Money skills are SO important in real life, particularly for an entrepreneur who wants to create their own business.
CHALLENGE 3 – Please go onto Education City. You have been set 2 tasks: ‘Squids In’ & ‘Supermarket’. This will help you to apply all of the skills we learnt earlier in the year at school.
