Children return to school Mon 8th April

4 Blue- Art and Book Week

What a fabulous week and what a wonderful group of children we have in 4 Blue! I am extremely impressed with how you have all returned to school and settled in. You have all been keen to take challenges and show uswhat a super bunch you are!

This week, our learning has been focused around a book called ‘Monsoon Afternoon’ by Kashmira Sheth.

The children have enjoyed experimenting with pastels and watercolour paints, exploring different techniques. They have all created a wonderful painting using the skills developed which is now on display in our classroom.

Children have researched the author to make fact files and have written setting descriptions for the story.

Watch our video to see all the great learning we have been doing.

Challenges:

1.Research monsoons. Which countries in the world experience monsoons? What are the effects of them?

2. Write a setting description for this illustration from the book.

    What are monsoons?
A monsoon is a countious rainfall that doesn’t stop for an extensive period of time. The monsoons in South Asia start in June and finish around September. They occur when the weather is extremely hot, and the ground is like dust.

Which countries in the world experience monsoons?
Two of the continents that have monsoons are South Asia and South America.

Here are some countries from Asia that have monsoons:
India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Nepal.
Here are some countries from America that have monsoons:
Brazil, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, and western Mexico and Paraguay.

What are the effects of them?
Farmers depend on monsoons. The amount and the timing can change every year. Monsoons can produce good crops, but flooding can happen. The flooding can damage crops. Monsoon rain can be a great relief for those areas affected by drought but can also bring about floods and can destroy crops causing famine. In July 2010 Pakistan experienced huge floods caused by the monsoon season. Monsoon rains lasted for 3 days and high waters and mudslides caused catastrophic damage.

1.A Monsoon is a seasonal heavy rain prevailing wind in the region of South and SE Asia, blowing from the South west between May and September and bringing rain(the wet monsoon),or from the north east between October and April(the dry monsoon)
With the world’s strongest Monsoon’s, this region stretches from the South China sea into the Indian ocean and includes Asia and the northern end of Australia. Summer monsoon rains occur in south Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Laos, India and Pakistan. Monsoon’s can have both negative and positive effects. Flooding caused by monsoon’s rains can destroy property and crops. However, seasonal monsoon rains can also provide fresh water for drinking and crop irrigation.

    1. A monsoon is a seasonal change in the direction of the prevailing, or strongest, winds of a region. Monsoons cause wet and dry seasons throughout the tropics. Monsoons are most often associated with the Indian Ocean. Monsoons always blow from cold to warm regions.
The South Asian monsoon affects Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The East Asian monsoon is experienced in India, China, Taiwan, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and the Philippines. The North American monsoon is experienced in Mexico and Southwest United States. The European monsoon affects the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, northern France and western Germany.
Monsoon rains are used by many countries for agriculture and energy generation. But too much monsoon rains can cause flooding and other health hazards.

    2. As the rain poured, the flowers started blooming and the trees started having fruits because the rain helped them grow. The rain filled up all the buckets and pots outside. There was so much wind that the swing started swinging on it’s own. The strong wind blew the gates open.

      What does the monsoon cause?
During the summer months, sunlight heats the surfaces of both lands and oceans, but land temperatures rise more quickly. Winds blow from the ocean to the land, moist air is brought inland. This is why summer monsoons cause so much rain.
      ———
      What are the monsoon effects?
Billions of people around the globe wait for the monsoon. In dry climates, monsoons are important for life as it gives water. But the monsoon cycle is a delicate balance. If rains start late, are too heavy, or not heavy enough, they can make a disaster for people’s livestock, crops, and lives.
If rains don’t start when they’re supposed to it can make people die. On the other hand, intense rainfall can cause massive flooding and kill hundreds of people, stop crops from growing and much more.

    2. In a hot summer day, the dark stormy clouds covered the sky in an unusual way. Suddenly, it started raining heavily, which caused all the empty buckets to start over flowing in a minute. The mangoes on the mango’s tree started falling down into a wet muddy puddle and a big splash flew up in the air and fell down. The pink flower tree was hit so hard by the rain and the flowers started to tilt as they were slowly dying.

Unbelievably, the hot dry summer day turned into a cool wet day in few minutes and there was a thick layer of water flowing across the streets. The rain smelt musky, fresh and it was usually a pleasant smell. It sounded like heavy popcorn popping all around you.

The boy smelt the wonderful aroma of rice and curry being cooked inside the house. When the boy stepped outside, his feet felt like they were going to sink into the ground because it had been sunny. In front of the boy, there was a rusty, old gates. Beside the boy, was a tree that had attractive, pink flowers. The pink flowers had translucent droplets upon them. Nearby the boy, there is another tree with bright green leaves. On this tree, there are ripe, yellow mangoes. Behind the boy, were three pots. Two of the pots are silver and one pot is gold. These are full of water because it is heavy rain.

  14. Kai D.

The world’s strongest monsoons region stretches from the South China Sea into the Indian Ocean and includes Asia and the northern end of Australia.
From June until September summer monsoon rains occur in South Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Laos, India,
    and Pakistan.
The primary cause of monsoons is the difference between annual temperature trends over land and sea.
The effects of monsoons are because regions with a monsoon climate have distinctly wet and dry seasons, they are prone to floods and droughts, both of which are hazardous to health. During summer monsoons, heavy rainfall can cause flooding.
“ As the rain started to fall the garden started to drench. It poured so much the buckets began to fill. The strong wind blew the swing back and forth. The flowers were finally blossomed with the blessings they wanted (rain).
