4W – Friday 15th May – Home Learning – English

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
This work is your home learning in English for today (Friday 15th May) and Monday 18th May. This means that you have 4 days, including the weekend, to do the work. It needs to be quality and lots of effort needs to be put into it. It will form a large chunk of your final information text so it would be better done on paper so you can keep it for the end of next week’s final draft. Please still send in a photo of your work to y4upload@broadheath.coventry.sch.uk

This task is all about collecting, learning and organising information. This information will form your information texts about the Tudors next week that you have already written the introduction for on Wednesday.

You need to start of by doing some research and write notes under a subheading then turning the notes into a detailed paragraph. Here is an example of notes taken from the following page.
http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/tudors/food.html
Remember notes only have simple information, they are not full sentences and are separated by bullet points.

Tudor Food:
* ate lots of fresh food
* no fridges or freezers
* no forks
* 75% of diet meat – oxen, deer, calves, pigs, badger, wild boar
* bread most meals – different for poor and rich
* lots of fresh fruit and veg – no food from abroad until the end
* fish eaten by people near rivers and sea
* had to eat fish on fridays and at Lent
* drank ale and rich drank wine
* water unfit for drinking

Now these notes need to be turned into a detailed paragraph under a subheading.

TUDOR FOOD
During Tudor times, people ate their food as fresh as possible because there was no such thing as fridges or freezers to store food for long periods. Did you know there was no forks in Tudor times? It’s true, they ate using their hands, knives and spoons. A quarter, thats 75%, of a wealthy Tudor’s diet would have been meat and they would eat animals like oxen, deer, calves, pigs and wild boars. They would even eat badgers. How disgusting is that! Bread would be eaten with most meals too, but the rich and poor had different types of bread. I would think that the rich bread tasted better. Wouldn’t you? Lots of fruit and vegetables were eaten too, but only ones that could be grown in Britain. Food from other countries only started arriving late in the Tudor reign. If you lived by the sea or a river, you would eat fish but everyone had to eat fish on a Friday and during Lent. Because water was unfit to drink, because it was contaminated with sewage, Tudors drank ale. Rich Tudors would also drink wine.

As you can see, this is very detailed, and your work needs to aspire to these standards too. Fronted adverbials, conjunctions, technical vocabulary, a range of punctuation (.?!,) and information text features are a must.

Here are the websites you can use to do the research:
https://primaryfacts.com/the-tudors-facts-information-and-resources/
http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/Tudors.html

Ayomide, Muhammad, Archi, Abdirahman, Abubaker, Bijan, Absi and Qasim : Research two areas of Tudor life and make notes. Then write your paragraphs.

All other pupils: Research 3 areas of Tudor life and make notes. Then, write three paragraphs with subheadings in your own words.

Hamaad, Aamina, Zaid, Iqra, Adeena, Yahya: As above, but write four paragraphs building on your own knowledge of the Tudors.

    Hi
Today the 3 headings are henryVIII and his 6 wives, battle of Bosworth and Tudor medicine.
The tudor monarchs were a Welsh family that ruled England from 1485 to 1603 this is 118 years. The 5 monarchs were King Henry VII ruled from 1485- 1509, King Henry VIII ruled from 1509- 1547, Edward VI ruled from 1547- 1553, Queen Mary I ruled from 1553- 1558 then lastly Elizabeth I from 1558 until 1603.
    Tudor medicine:
In Tudor times they didnt have scientists or resources so tudors made up there own remedies, alot of herbal remedies that were known as ‘simples’ one example is they used sage, lavender and marjoram for headaches. They had unusual theorys like if they hung red curtains around patients beds it would cure small pox. When they had to see patients that had the plague (black death) they wore bird mask and vinger soaked clothes so they would get infected. If you wasnt wealthy in tudor times you would have to see the wise woman for home made remedies whereas if you were rich you would be visited by a doctor. They also thought if you had too much blood this was bad blood so they either cut peoples veins or put leeches on peoples skin.

    Battle of Bosworth:
This was the last significant battle of the ‘wars of Rose’s’ this was faught in 1485 it lasted 32 years between 2 branches of the
same family, the house of York and the house of Lancaster both family’s was descended from Edward III. Richard the III edwards brother died and lost 1, 000 of his men. In the end Lancastrians (red Rose’s) won and Edward VII became king.

    Henry and his 6 wives:
Henry’s first wife was Catherine of Aragon they married 11th June 1509 untill 23rd of May 1533, she was divorced because she couldn’t have a son. Henry’s 2nd wife Anne Boyleyn was married to Henry on 25th of January 1533 untill 17th of May 1536 she was beheaded because committed adulatory. Henry then married his 3rd wife Jane Seymour on 30th of May 1536 until 24th of October 1537 when she sadly died not long after giving birth to Edward VI. His fourth wife was Anne of Cleeves they was only married for 6 months from 6th of January 1540 until the 9th of July the same year. Kathryn Howard was Henry’s fifth wife she was married on 28th of July 1540 until 13th of Feburary 1542 she was beheaded as she was accused of adulatory, treason and conspiring against the king. His last wife was Catherine Parr they got married on 12th of July 1543 until 28th of January 1547 she became a widower in 1547 when Henry died. (I had little help from my mum with this).

    Henry had six wives because….

He had the first wife because he was betrothed to her by his father.

He had the second wife because he fell in love and also needed a legitimate male heir.

He had the third wife because he still needed a male heir.

He had the fourth wife because of diplomatic reasons.

He had the fifth wife because he fell in love again.

He had the sixth wife because he was old and sick and needed
a companion and nurse who wouldn’t give him too much trouble.

Henry’s main aim was to make sure that the Tudors would keep on
    ruling England after he died.
Henry believed that only a boy could inherit his kingdom.
But his son Edward ruled only for six years.

    Tudor Children

Long hours studying and working didn’t stop Tudor children having fun and playing games.
Toys were often made from wood or materials which were easily available, such as clay,
stone and animal bones. Pig bladders were blown up to make footballs, hoops were made
from old barrels, and pebbles or cherry stones were used to play marbles or jacks.

    Tudor period:
The Tudor reign lasted from from 1485 to 1603.
The Tudors were a Welsh-English family that ruled England and Wales from 1485 to 1603 – one of the most exciting periods of British .
The first Tudor king was Henry Vll. He became king after the battle of Bosworth field, which ended the War of the Roses. He was followed by his son, Henry Vlll, who was famous for marrying six times and beheading two of his wives! His son, Edward Vl ruled after him, followed by his daughters Mary l and Elizabeth l.
    Health care.
Their were no proper Medical system in the Tudors. Only rich people get treated by a doctor and poor people usually get treated by herbs
And a barber worked as a dentist . They also believe in silly to cure the patient like hanging red clothes around the small pox patients.

    TUDOR TIMES

The Tudors were a Welsh-English family that ruled England and Wales from 1485 to 1603, starting with the first monarch King Henry VII (1457–1509). The Tudors ruled for 118 years and Tudor England saw two of the strongest monarchs ever to sit on the English throne: King Henry VIII and his daughter Queen Elizabeth I.

The Tudor monarchs were Henry VII (1485-1509), his son Henry VIII (1509-1547), and the latter’s three children Edward VI (1547-1553), Mary I (1553-1558), and Elizabeth I (1558-1603).
A member of the family, Owen Tudor, married the widow of Henry V. Their eldest son, Edmund, Earl of Richmond, married Margaret Beaufort, member of a family which illegitimately descended from John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and son of Edward III, and which had later been legitimised but excluded from the royal succession.

    1. Miss Phillpotts

This is a great paragraph about the Tudor family Zaid! What are the other three topics you will write paragraphs about? Remember you have the weekend and Monday to write the whole text!
