6 Red Book and Performance week

Wow! What a great week! We have seen so much BRILLIANT work from all of you. We are so proud!

Our book for this week was Journey to Jo’burg by Beverley Naidoo. This story is about a brother and sister on a journey to find their mum.

When their baby sister suddenly becomes very sick, Naledi and Tiro know, deep down, that only one person can save her. Bravely, alone, they set off on a journey to find Mma and bring her back. It isn’t until they reach the city that they come to understand the dangers of their country, and the painful struggle for freedom and dignity that is taking place all around them.

We learnt a range of skills whilst studying this book. Some of these skills were:

  • Using a range of grammatical structures
  • Using a range of cohesive devices in our speaking
  • Identifying key themes and linking these to our lives
  • Using and applying our School Values
  • Present in a variety of ways, opinions on a wide range of topics affecting themselves and others
  • Explore a controversial issue considering both sides of an argument

We also used new and ambitious vocabulary in our performances. We linked topic, maths and art skills to our theme so we had a wide learning scope.

What did you enjoy about the week? What did you learn?

In book and performance week my favorite thing was drawing our pictures of people. The picture was a man in prison just because he was black.I those days you would get hit if you were black. I learnt that it was very difficult in those days it was especially hard for the black people.

I enjoyed the Zulu performance because it reminded me how many different cultures are. Also they performed and showed us songs and dances. If they had not come and were disheartened by racism, to see the performance you would have to go to South Africa. This shows that the Zulu showed resilience and perseverance.

I learnt that in the Zulu religion they believe you carry on living after death just like other religions but in a spiritual world. They believe in ghosts and illnesses are caused by evil spirits. To get rid of the illness they believe that a traditional doctor to help them cure the illness.

I enjoyed watching the Zulu people because you can learn different things about what they did in South Africa like what type of dances they did and what they wore when they were dancing and sown the diffence between different cultures in good ways.
I learnt about the Zulu culture and researched their daily life and what they did during their time when they don’t dance,’they would go out to the fields to weed the crops and the herd boys would return back to the cattle shed which were milked in the shed’.
Also I learnt about the black people and how they were treated and I found out that the white people had more power than the black people all over their skin colour, I though that that was just childish all over their skin colour because they are the same as anyone else just that their skin colour. It’s just like saying only blacks people can wear black and white people can only wear white. Also if black people were protesting they would go to jail so basically the white people had all the power. The blacks would get beaten to the ground as well.

I enjoyed the Zulu performance with all their cool 😎 moves. I also enjoyed doing role play on key scenes of the book. I learnt that in some certain countries, black people had less rights than white people. They were also in control and were ruling the country. I also learnt about Zulu culture, their foods, their tradition and their everyday life. Another thing I learnt was that in South Africa, the black people needed a pass to go to certain areas and the police would check for it. If they didn’t have it, black people would get whipped and would be put in jail.

I enjoyed the part where we had our own choice of title and making review on the book journey to joburg also I enjoyed the Zulu performance and doing a dance with it . I learnt about Zulu culture and the dances, the Zulu culture was started in 1971 and they are from south Africa they mostly do dance on the streets in south Africa . Also I learnt about what happened in that time ,it was a black country and white people were controlling it and if you were protesting you would go straight to jail if you didn’t have a pass you would o to jail . They would get whipped , belted and beaten to the ground . I know this because in the story in the police section there was a police officer went in the rain station and this man saved Nalidi and Tairo’s life and the man that saved them went away to jail.

I enjoyed the Zulu performance because it’s nice how different people dance different ways.I learnt that the only way to go out of the country or to a beach they needed their pass.If they forgot than the police would take them away.
