6 Red English – Moon Landing 18.05.20

Good morning, everyone! I hope you have had a good weekend.

Your English work for today will evolve around the Moon landing.

Activity 1

What could the warning alarm mean?

Can you describe what it might feel like to be walking on the moon?

It is extremely expensive to send a human into space. It is even more expensive and dangerous to send people to the moon: it hasn’t been attempted for many years. Do you think it is important that we try to understand more about space and the moon?

In the year 2013, 200 000 people from 140 different countries applied to take part in a special project: to become the first people to live on Mars in the year 2023. Do you think that living in space is something that might one day be considered ‘normal’? Is it something you would like to do? Can you make a list of reasons for/against living on Mars?

Activity 2

Imagine you are exploring the surface of the moon as an astronaut. Can you draw what you might see?

Activity 3

Can you continue the story of the Apollo mission to the moon?

Story starter!
“Houston come in. Houston come in. This is Apollo 11. We have touched down on the surface of the moon. Over.”

“Apollo 11, this is Houston. You are clear to begin your mission. Over.”

Gazing around in a state of awe and wonder, the astronaut stood and admired what he saw. Outer space was a thing of pure beauty: a never-ending chasm of blackness, illuminated by stars that sparkled like beautiful diamonds.

He took a few steps forward, smiling at the joy of the feeling of weightlessness that never ceased to amaze him. Happy that his oxygen levels were high and his friends were close by, the astronaut set about his mission.

All seemed to be going well, but then the warning alarm on the ship sounded…

“Houston. Houston come in! Houston, we have a problem…”

You will be making progress by…

Can you use subordination in a sentence, using a main clause and a subordinate clause?

Can you separate the clauses using a comma?

Can you use one of the following conjunctions to link your clauses: but, or, yet, so? e.g. The mission so far had gone exactly to plan, but now there was a sense of dread and panic as the alarm sounded.

Include powerful descriptive language.

To include figurative language in your work.

Looking forward to seeing your work today.

  1. Samuel – You have copied this from another child.
This is not fair. We will discuss when we call you this week. Please write in your own words please.

  2. The alarm might mean he doesn’t have that much oxygen.

You would feel light because there is no gravity in space.

I think it is important to know more about space and the moon because maybe one day we will want to become astronauts and we will need to know more things about space and the moon.

Yes, I think that living in space will one day be considered normal because technology keeps evolving day after day.

I would not like to live on Mars because:
I would not have that much oxygen.
I would not have that much food as there aren’t any shops there that you could just go to an alien and ask them for some alien food and drinks.

I would like to live on Mars because:
I would like to experience living on another planet.

  3. What Could be the warning alarm mean
Mean-emergency alarm that there is no oxygen that tells you there is danger so that you can keep alert.
A sign to tell you that there is no oxygen in space
I would feel uncomfortable to be walking on the moon due to being expensive and no oxygen in space is extremely expensive and there is no oxygen and trees to generate oxygen
    Activity 2
I can see rocks dust and sand
There is no reason plants to produce oxygen.

    • A mucch better attempt at your work today, Samuel! I like it! This will support your progress!

Are you reading everyday? What are you reading at the moment?

  4. Activity 1.
I think the warning alarm could be that something is about to happen.I think what it might feel like to be waking in the moon would be very light and delightful.I think we can understand this is because sometimes by here can be really bad accidents on the moon.I think that l still wouldn’t be accepted as normal because they need plenty of food and water to survive on the moon also appropriate houses. I don’t think I would like to live on the moon but it still can be fun when you float on the moon.
    Activity 2.
I have send a picture by email.
    Activity 3.
“Houston come in! Houston We have a problem.”
Houston never answered..Apollo 11 and his friends got worried because there was huge asteroid coming their way. They had no choice but to leave the moon and return to Earth. “Every body quick quick gate in!”Apollo 11 shoted. Everybody hade got into the rocket and set off the get to earth. The asteroid was far behind after they had left.

    • The effort you have put in here is great – well done!

I can see you are making progress in your English work in these few short weeks! Keep it up.

  5. The alarm might mean that he is low on fuel.It could frightening because it is very dangerous also because if they get lost then they would be stuck on the moon.It could feel relaxing because when they are on the moon they are practically weightless

    • and they do not have to do that much to move around.I do not think that it is important that we learn more about the moon because we do not really need to and the cons outweigh the pros.I do not think that living in space will ever be normal. This is because it is expensive meaning very few people will be able to go there thus making it a rare and unusual event. It is not something that I would like to do though it is very interesting.
      For:
There is a place for people to stay.
      It is fun.
      We learn more about Mars.
      Against.
      It is expensive
      It is dangerous
It might be hard to find people who actually want to go.

  6. The moon was a wraith-silver disc hanging in the lonely sky. Lasers of moonlight, as bright as diamond-flame, turned the sea a-glow like melted platinum. It was as if I was watching a scene from an old fable stepping off the page and I was beguiled by its beauty. It felt as if I had no control of my body and that I was dreaming.

Is it something you would like to do?
No as in space there is barely any oxygen and it will make you feel like you are in between 2 walls. There is about 95% of carbon dioxide as Safa said and We cannot breathe in this gas.

  7. 1)it feel you like your body is free and wont feel as heavy
2)yes it is very important to learn at moon
    3) i think going to mars is good because it has less oxygen

  8. The warning light is to tell you that this is a very dangerous place and are you sue you want to be here. You will feel weightless and every time you take a step you bounce even higher than your height. We should live on Mars because it will be a get away from global warming and potentially Covid-19.We shouldn’t go there because it is an unknown territory there might be something we might discover which is not friendly.

Housten was in awe to see what he was seeing sweat covered his face like rain as his knees were wobbling crazily. A massacare
occurred all his team was in shock as he had to complete his task but it was not going to plan not yet for sure…

  9. Activity 1
What does warning alarm mean ?
It means that if something goes wrong an alarm will go off. I think this because ”warning” means to notify someone and an alarm is a time where you stop doing something.
Can you describe what it might feel like to be walking on the moon?
It will feel like you are flying in thin air. Also you will be hot because you are wearing a space outfit. I think it would be awesome and fun. I would describe this as being able to fly.
Do you think that living in space is something that might one day be considered ‘normal’?
I think this wouldn’t be considered as normal because what if people don’t want to learn about space ? What if no one is interested in doing this? Many people may get scared.
Is it something you would like to do?
No because it could be a risk of life and what if I couldn’t come back to Earth.
    For/Against living on Mars?
    For
*It would give us an experience of what it would be like on Mars
*We will find out if people/aliens live there
*We could find out what it is like to live on Mars
    Against
*What if they don’t have food
*Why should we choose to go to Mars we have already disturbed the earth by : pollution, killing animals for e.g Elephants and building houses on animals natural habitats so why should we interfere on another planet.
    Activity 2
I have sent you a picture of my work through email
    Activity 3

”Whats the problem. Over ”, cried Houston. ”The problem is that we have no more fuel for the rocket. Over ”, said the astronaut support. ”We will make a plan, while you admire the things on mars. Over ”, the astronaut support added.

Houston admired the red planet filled with plops of ”Mars mud” , he then pulled out a tub from the rocket and put a hand full of ”Mars mud” in it. Jumped a bit more and found a family. They spoke gibberish to Houston.

”babish jdhdbjf fhdhfuy dhfsdfhslgyherujweiewjrlwhrkerfwek euherehehre ehhrywejr ygrehruwb aaaah”, said the mars family. Houston asked them ”What are you called”. Obviously, they understood English so they replied ” plosh fashi ”, which means plosh family. GLITCH GLITCH OVER DOwNnnnnnnnnn…

    • Wow – this is great! Well done.
      Like the detail here.

Just think about how we can keep a more formal style. For example: You have used the word, ‘plop’. Is there a more suitable word to use or description?

  10. 1.i think your body might feel free and u could push your body high in space
2.i think we should learn more so if we could send more people to the moon
i think they shouldn’t go to mars because it has less oxygen than earth

  11. The alarm might mean that he is low on oxygen and the spacecraft is damaged. It might also mean the people have lost track of him and he needs to get back to the spacecraft. You would feel weightless because in space there is no gravity.
It wouldn’t be a normal thing living in space because you could get lost and you wouldn’t have enough oxygen or food to make you survive.
The astronaut was shocked he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He quickly rushed back without thinking only to find out he had gone the wrong way. He tried to call for the space team but they weren’t responding he had lost all hope.

  12. Activity 1
    1. Walking on the moon could be unique and amazing. It could be unique because there is no gravity on space and you will be most of the time in the air. It also can be unique because this opportunity may be once in a lifetime.
    2. I personally think that we should know more about space and moon because there could be a solar flare or any other astronomical disaster.
    3.
For reasons to live on Mars
*I think that at one point on Earth there are going to be no more trees, but trees generate oxygen. This is because people cut down trees (otherwise deforestation) and use paper to write or print.
    * Another option why living on Mars would be useful because not only deforestation is happening but also there is a plastic in the ocean problem were people do not understand that hundreds and hundreds of animals die daily because of this, we don’t know if they’re going to be extinct, but the fact is that these animals aren’t immortal, they won’t be alive in the next 50 years if this keeps happening.

    Against reasons to live
    * Due to facts, we know that not a single human body live on Antarctica. I have researched, gathered facts about the temperature on mars and it is nearly as cold as Antarctica’s. Mars’s atmosphere is about 100 times thinner than Earth’s. Without a thermal blanket, Mars can’t retain any heat energy. On average, the temperature on Mars is about minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 60 degrees Celsius). In winter, the temperature can get down to minus 195 degrees F (minus 125 degrees C). A summer day on Mars may get up to 70 degrees F (20 degrees C) near the equator, but at night the temperature can plummet to about minus 100 degrees F (minus 73 C).
Activity 2 done on a piece of paper.

    • These are great responses – well done!

How do you think humans could live on Mars as currently the atmosphere on Mars will not allow humans to survive.

  13. Can you describe what it might feel like to be walking on the moon?
My heart was racing. I could feel the excitement building up in the air as this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The moon was nothing like Earth. I was surrounded with a complete variety of pebbles, rocks, and boulders.
Is it something you would like to do?
No this is because you can not breath on Mars as the atmosphere
Is it something you would like to do?there 95 percent carbon dioxide. We can not breath in this type of gas. Also, yes because it would be a new experience to live in space and you can grow sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, kale, dandelions, basil, garlic, and hops on Mars.

  14. Activity 1
1} It may feel like you are flying and your body might not feel as heavy as before.
2}Yes it is important to study space and the moon. But we shouldn’t force anybody to go there unless they want to and they have the protective equipment.
3} I do think that in the coming years a decision could be made to send a certain number of people there to see if the planet Mars has all the qualities needed to survive.
    Activity 2
4} I have completed this in my homework book and I will send a picture.
5} The astronaut looked shocked. His heart was pounding like a drum. He stood there frozen. Not wanting to ask what dreadful thing may be the problem.”Houston, can you hear me!” shouted the captain. The astronaut didn’t respond.”Houston this is not the right time to be playing your tricks on me” an old man exclaimed.

  15. Q1)The warning alarm might be there because a meteor might explode . So if there was someone walk on the moon they would know something bad is gonna happen because there would be a warning alarm.
Q2)It would be really scary for me because I’m a little scared of heights and it might be dark and i’m afraid of dark.
Q3)I think it is very important for us to learn more about the moon and space because space provides a lot of thing for example metal , rare objects and etc. These special things cure diseases and help us to survive.
Q4)I think it wouldn’t be normal for a human or a group of people to live on earth because you would be floating and everything else. You might be able to sleep because you would strap yourself but sometimes you may not have a strap.
