6 Red’s English learning journey – Mystery stories

You have finished your first English unit on mystery stories.

Using our learning journey and the journey in your book, please write down what you have learnt and how you know this. I am looking for the key learning skills that have helped you write a mystery story. For example:

  • You identified a range of genres and its intended audience. Can you give examples?
  • You could identify language and text features that show a particular genre. Can you give examples?
  • You learnt to use specific writing skills to help your writing ‘stand out’. Can you give examples of these?
  • What makes a mystery story ‘stand out’? Please explain.

I am looking forward to seeing your replies.

Good so far…just think about some of the language features and sentence level work we have done. This has a big impact on the reader. You have demonstrated this in your writing – can you verbalise this?

In English, we have been learning about Mystery stories, which are a type of Genre.I would like to write my opinions and answers to these questions and share them with you.

1.I think the intended audience for a Mystery story would be maybe 5+.If it was a mystery story with not much blood or none at all, I would say 5+.If it had loads of gore in it, I would say 12+.

2.In a Mystery story, you could use Figurative Language, such as similies, metaphors or others. You could also use preposition or maybe some personification. It is up to you.
I advise you to use some Show Not Tell, or some suspense.

3.You could include some Semi-Colons to your sentence instead of using the word ‘and’, or it would be repetitive.
You could add Multi-Clause sentences, using a Main Clause and a Subordinate Clause.

4.Use good adjectives!!!This is so it will stand out to the audience or whoever is watching or reading this.Use good use of language and also use punctuation, such as ellipsis.
So remember to make it stand out to the reader or audience!

Sci-fi : The intended audience cold be for all people but scientists or adults might enjoy it a bit more.
Mystery- The effect is that you want to know what happens so you whatch/read on
Romance- The features are a bit of mystery because the audience want to know who he or she is going to marry
A mystery story stands out because it has a lot of suspense and audience get curious.

In English I have learnt different genres such as horror,si-fi,Fantasy and mystery. We have also been learning mystery stories and building suspense. The type of language we have been using in our mystery story’s are figurative language, fronted adverbials, short sentences for effect, discriptive language ellipsis to build tension. Our mystery stories have to make the reader carry on reading.we should have clues from the text. We used suspense to build a picture in the readers

    Mystery genre
. The genre that we have been learning about is mystery. One of the features that we have been learning about is suspense because this targets the audience and make them feel that they want to carry on with the story. This will want to make them feel puzzled and mystery stories and leave the readers mind flooded with thoughts on what happened.

. The language that you could find in a mystery story is ellipses because this type of language makes the reader want to find out more about the story…

An example of book we looked at is Harry Potter. This book is aimed at teenagers and adults. Some bits in the story are too scary for the younger audience. The genre of this book is mystery because it has a lot of description and it builds suspense.
Something that makes a mystery story stand out is when it builds suspense. Also it makes a mystery story stand out by using powerful vocabulary.

When we wrote our mystery story’s we used short sentences and descriptive language .

    1. Fantasy genres are about mystical made up stories , which is fiction and the intended audience is children and creative people. Some of the features of a fantasy genre is mythical creatures, magical or dark place, comedy and a hero and a villain.
    2. For example, horror genres have short sentences, ellipsis, show not tell, rhetorical questions and it builds up suspense. This makes the audience feel terrified and curious what is going to happen next. The audience will be anyone who wants to read horror.
    3. In our writing, we learnt to use writing tricks such as semi colons, different types of clauses, dialogue and sentence openers. This helps us take our writing to the next level. Instead of being the same old story.
    4. To make a mystery story stand out you should have a twist to give more effect on the audience because if you don’t have a twist ,your mystery story is simple, boring and not interesting and the reader won’t read more.

Throughout the Journey in year 6, we have learnt a lot of things such as genres. Genre means when there is a theme to a story;Mystery, comedy, horror, sci fi, romance, fantasy, adventure. If a horror story came into your sight and you started to watch it, then I think the intended audience might be adults and teens because in my opinion, I think children shouldn’t watch this;they could get terrified. One of the main genres we have been learning about is Mystery. The features of a mystery story are:
    .Elipsis
    .Short sentences
    .building suspense
    .Short paragraphs etc
If we use theses features, we could produce a fantastic mystery story. We could also create effect on the reader by persuading them to read on and find out what happenes.

  14. Usman Khan

In our English we have wrote a mystery story. We identified many features of a mystery story. We have learnt to identify many genres such as adventure story and many more.We could identify the genres by looking at the vocabulary used in the texts e.g If there was a mystery story we would’ve look at the vocabulary used in the text.If you were to write a mystery story you would use features like show not tell, ellipses. If you were to read a horror you find powerful adjective and also suspense .You can find horror story for all ages depending on the language and diagram’s used by Usman and Eros

  15. Abdul Akbar-Tahir

A example of a genre is horror and I think it should be for teenagers over 14 Eventhough kids under 11 watch horror movies.
I think horror movies such as anabele2, the conjuring, dead silence, the grudge and Childs play shouldn’t be watched by kids under 14 because they are a bit scary and can be in there night mares.

  16. Eesa Akhalwaya

You could make a mystery storie stand out by distraction and also ellipsis to build tension.Example:he walked until saw 10 dead bodies…Also short sentences is good at building suspense.Example:what would he do?We looked about different genres like horror, fantasy, comedy and si-fi.Also rhetorical questions is a big bonus because it will ask the reader questions.

  17. Keiren Spicer

    What will the ardents say
The atther might be really enjoyed

Will it be a horror movie
    Key features
    Question

  18. Kaiden Dryden

some examples of genres are here: horror and also in horror you may find powerful vocabulary or maybe ellipses that will build up suspence to the audience that will maybe read that text or book.A mystery story stands out by all the clues leading towards the solution also it gives the reader distractions and uses show not tell.In mystery text the normal setting will be places of action. Some of the features are suspence retort all questions and ellipses. The audience will feel quite a spine tingle with mystery story because of the description. The ages for this is depending on the writing also the writer will use shor sentences.

  19. Elyass Daud

The examples of genre is horror and that scares people and sometimes in the book or movie it builds up suspense.Another genre is action, and action and you will normally experience some sort of battle or war or fight in their and I think that nearly all of the stories make you want to read on because of the language they use to grab your attention. What makes nearly all the stories interesting is the figurative language to build imagery and short sentences for effect.
