6B 20/05-Maths (Angles in polygons)

What is a regular polygon?

How do you find the measure of each interior angle of a polygon ...

Bronze- Mrs Ahmed’s Maths group
(For this task you would benefit from drawing these shapes out and practically folding them into triangles etc)

Silver- Miss Vega’s Maths group

Gold- Mrs Hurts Maths group

    1. Mrs Ahmed

      Thanks Azan, how are you finding angles in shapes so far?

    2. Mrs Jones

      Great work Azan🙌🏻. Can you have a go at question 5 and find the missing angles?

  4. Ayaan H.

    I have done it on paper

    1. Mrs Ahmed

      Please take a photo and email it to y6upload@broadheath.coventry.sch.uk

    2. Mrs Jones

      Great well done Ayaan. Please send in a photo so we can see your work.

    What is a regular polygon?
    A polygon is regular when all angles are equal and all sides are equal

    Mrs Ahmed’s Math group:
    ________

    What do the interior angles of triangle A add up to?
    It adds up to 180°

    What do the interior angles of the triangle B add up to?
    It adds up to 180°

    What is the sum of angle in a quadrilateral?
    The sum is 360°
    _______

    Pentagon – 5 – 3 – 180 × 3 – 540°
    __

    Hexagon – 6 – 4 – 180 × 4 = 720°
    __

    Heptagon – 7 – 5 – 180 × 5 = 900°

    What do you notice?

    That the number of triangles is going in order, and you have to times the number of triangles to 180.

    _______________________________

    1)

    B) Number of sides = 6
    Number of triangles = 4
    4 × 180 = 720°
    The sum of the interior angle of a hexagon is 720°
    _____

    C) Number of sides = 7
    Number of triangles = 5
    5 × 180 = 900°
    The sum of the interior angles of a heptagon is 900°
    ____
    What do you notice about the number of sides compared to the number of triangles?

    I’ve noticed that the number of sides is going in order like 5,6,7 etc..
    and the number of triangles is going in order to!

      Super organisation, structure and correct answers-Well done!

      1. Khadijah A.

        Thank you, Mrs Ahmed😁

    2. Mrs Jones

      Great work Khadijah. Do you feel confident you understand how to find the interior angles in shapes with a different number of sides?

      1. Khadijah A.

        Yes I feel much more confident with angles and shapes1

  6. Jessica M.

    These questions seem kind of hard.

    1. Mrs Ahmed

      Well you haven’t even had a go.

      You didn’t try yesterday, you haven’t done your English today either.

      You are capable of answering these questions but actually need to read the blogs, watch the videos and then complete the challenge.

    2. Mrs Jones

      Give it your best please Jessica. How are you getting on with the work pack we gave you?

    4)Rosie, Amir and Eva are drawing polygons.
    a) What polygon has Rosie drawn?
    Rosie has drawn a hexagon.

    b)What polygon has Amir drawn?
    Amir has drawn an octagon.

    c)What is the sum of the interior angles of Eva’s polygon?
    The sum of interior angles is 900°.

    5)Each compound shape is made up of regular polygons.
    Work out angle y in each case.
    a) 720°÷6=120°
    90°+120°=210°
    360°-210°=150°
    90°+120°+150°=360°
    y=150°

    b)540°÷5=108°
    108°×3=324°
    360°-324°=36°
    108°+108°+108°+36°=360°
    y=36°

    c)1080°÷8=135°
    135°+60°+90°=285°
    360°-285°=75°
    135°+60°+90°+75°=360°
    y=75°

    d)540°÷5=108°
    108°-60°=48°
    y=48°

    e)540°÷5=108°
    180°-108°=72°
    72°÷2=36°
    108°-36°=72°
    y=72°

    f)540°÷5=108°
    1080°÷8=135°
    135°-108°=27°
    y=27°
