6R 18/5- Maths (Angles in special quadrilaterals)

Good morning Year Six! I hope you’ve had a nice weekend relaxing and enjoying the weather. Today is the start of your final learning week before half term. We look forward to seeing you active (as expected from 9am-3pm)

Quick refresher:
Types of angles?
What do angles on a line total to?
What do angles in a triangle total to?
What is a vertically opposite angle?
What is a QUADrilateral?

Brilliant, the video shares some very good facts:
*What shapes classify as a quadrilateral.
*All 4 angles in a quadrilateral shape total to 360 degrees (the same as a circle).
*How to apply the bar model technique to find missing angles.

    Miss Vega’s maths group:

    1). A) a = 117.
    B) b = 57.
    C) The trapezium on the right as two right angles but the trapezium on the left doesn’t have any.
    2). A) c = 135.
    B) d = 102.
    C) Two of the angles are the same and the other two are the same as well.
    3). A) x and z are 56.
    B) y and z are 38.
    I can notice that x and z are the same. Also, y and z are the same as well.

    1. Mr Patel

      You are getting better at explaining your answers here. Well done.

  2. Humaira K.

    1.)A.)Adds up to 360 degrees.
    B.)Adds up to 360 degrees.
    2.)Angles in a quadrilateral adds up to 360.

    1. Mr Patel

      Good. Next time, please explain your answers.

  3. Mahamad Y.

    1.) W equals 38 degrees. Y equals 38 degrees. X equals 56. Z equals 56 degrees.
    B.) W+X=94 degrees.
    C.) Y+Z= 94 degrees.
    2.) R = 121 degrees. G=73 degrees. T=107 degrees. U=119 degrees.
    3.) His shape is not possible as there are 360 degrees in a shape. If 3 angles are right angles there is 90 degrees remaining. The last angle will have to be 90 degrees.

    1. Mr Patel

      Good work, Mahamad.

      Your explanation isn’t as good as previous weeks.

  4. Humza H.

    1.W=43 Y=43 X=61 Z=61
    B. W+X=104 Z+Y=104
    2.69,73,107,149
    Yes because all it needs is 4 sides so he can have 2 right angles and it will still be a quadrilateral.

    1. Mr Patel

      Please explain your ideas. This seems a little rushed.

  5. Muhammad G.

    1)
    W=38
    Y=38
    X=56
    Z=56
    W+X=94°
    Y+Z=94°
    2)
    The missing angle is 69°
    The missing angle is 73°
    The missing angle is 107°
    The missing angle is 119°
    3)
    Teddy’s quadrilateral is incorrect because if 3 angles are 90° then to get to 360° you have to add 90° so therefore Teddy is incorrect.

    1. Mr Patel

      Hi Muhammad – good answers.

      Please can you explain your answers. This is important to aid your understanding.

  6. Mustafa G.

    1.117 this is because 90 add 90 add 63 minus 360 is 117
    2.57 because they are opposite each other.
    3.135 because they are vertically opposite.
    4.102 because the angles are vertically opposite each other.
    5.W=38 degrees
    Y=38 degrees
    X=56 degrees
    Z=56 degrees
    W+X=94
    Y+Z=94

    1. Mr Patel

      Good – but can you explain your answers please?

  7. Safa H.

    Types of angles?
    The types of angles are acute angle ( between 0 and 90 degrees ), a right angle ( 90 degree angle ), an obtuse angle ( between 90 and 180 degrees ) and a reflex angle ( greater than 180 degrees and less than 360 degrees ).
    What do angles on a line total to?
    Angles on a Straight Line Add to 180.
    What do angles in a triangle total to?
    Angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees.
    What is a vertically opposite angle?
    Vertically Opposite Angles are the angles opposite each other when two lines cross and they have the same vertex.
    What is a Quadrilateral?
    A quadrilateral is a 4 sided 2D shape.

      Great answers!

  8. Jeremi J.

    1.
    W=38
    Y=38
    X=56
    Z=56
    W+X=94
    Y+Z=94
    2.R=69
    3.S=73
    4.T=107
    5.U=119

    1. Miss Kaur

      Well done Jeremi, can you answer the last question ( Teddy is drawing a quadrilateral ) using mathematical vocabulary to explain your response.

    2. Mr Patel

      Hi Jeremi – Please ‘reason’ these answers. Your explanations will help you to understand the learning further.

    The types of angles are an acute angle, a right angle, an obtuse angle and a reflex angle.Angles on a line total to 180 degrees.Angles in a triangle total to 18 degrees. Vertically Opposite Angles are the angles opposite each other when two lines cross. A quadrilateral is a shape with 4 sides.

    Mrs Hurts maths group:
    A)
    180-104 is equal to 76.Because I know that there are two angles then one has to be half of 76 which is 38.
    W=38°
    The other angles in the triangle add up to 142.180 minus 142 would leave 38 remaining.Therefore,
    Y=38°
    I already know that one angle is equal to 68.180 minus 68 is 112.This means that all the other angles in the triangle have to add up to 112.If there are two other angles of equal size then one would be half of 112 which is 56.
    X=56°
    All the other angles in the triangle add up to 168.To find the size of the third angle I have to subtract 168 from 180.This would give me 56.
    Therefore,
    Z=56°

    B.W+X=94
    C.Y+Z=94
    I noticed that the answers were the same.

    6)
    A.I know that there are 360 degrees in a quadrilateral.The other angles add up to 291.360-291 is equal to 69.Therefore,
    R=69°
    B.I know that angle the angles are vertically opposite.This means that they have to be the same.Therefore,
    S=73°
    C.Angle t is the same as the angle next to it which is 107°.
    T=107°
    D.I know that there are two right angles which add up to 180 degrees.180+61 is equal to 241.To find out the size of the last angle you have to subtract 241 from 360.
    360-241=119.To double check I looked to see if it was bigger than 90° and it was so my answer was right.
    U=+119°

    7.If three of the angles are 90° then the fourth angle must be 90°.Therefore teddy’s quadrilateral is not possible.

    1. Mr Patel

      Good, Umar! This is a quality response. You have explained your answers! Good lad!

      Looking forward to your English work.

  10. Zahrah M.

    Quick refresher
    Q1)The types of angles are acute, right angle , obtuse .
    Q2)Angles on a straight line add up to 180 degrees .
    Q3)Angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees.
    Q4)A vertical opposite angle is angles opposite each other when two lines cross.
    Q5)A Quadrilateral is a 4 sided polygon.

    A)The square adds up to 360 degrees
    B)The rectangle adds up to 360 degrees.
    I notice that both of them shapes have 4 right angles each.
    C)Angles in a Quadrilateral create a full turn which is 360 degrees.

    1. Mr Patel

      Well done, Zahrah!
      Are you able to explain to me what a polygon is?

  11. Ayaan P.

    1.
    W=38
    Y=38
    X=56
    Z=56
    W+X=94
    Y+Z=94
    2.R=69
    3.S=73
    4.T=107
    5.U=119
    6.Teddy’s quadrilateral is not possible as it needs four sides and three right angles.This can’t be possible as having all 4 straight would be 4 right angles.3 straight and 1 side at an angle would be two right angles so it is not possible.

    1. Mr Patel

      Good answers, Ayaan.

      For numbers 1 -5, are you able to ‘reason’ your answers with the correct mathematical vocabulary?

  12. Mr Patel

    Looking forward to your work.
