6R 20/5 – Wind in the Willows

Hi year 6,

Today we are going to start a new book and a new scheme of work; instead of focussing on our reading skills, today we will be focussing on our listening. Each of you must listen to the clip below… it is 15 minutes long but it has been read excellently and really is quite enjoyable. You need to listen to Episode 1.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks2-the-wind-in-the-willows-episode-1-the-river-bank/zffcvk7

I suggest that you have a look at the activity set and keep this in mind when listening to the extract. Find somewhere quiet to sit, get comfy and enjoy!
Today you will be hearing a lot about the idyllic setting in which the characters live and you will also be introduced to a few of the key characters.

  1. Can you name 3 characters? Give a brief explanation of what they are like. What do they look like? What kind of personality do they have?

Throughout this episode we are introduced to the main
characters’ homes and environments in which they live. These are happy,
idyllic scenes described in detail.

2. Think about how these scenes make us feel as readers. Is this a place we would like to go to or live ourselves? Identify the words the author has chosen and make a word bank that you could use to write a setting description.

Challenge – Can you create a setting description of the riverbank?

The tranquil river stood still as the breeze merrily skipped through the long emerald grass, which swayed from side to side. The brown boat sat comfortably on the river bed. Exquisitely, the kingfishers and robins sang, while the crickets chirped.

    2. It is very peaceful on a boat ride in a lake because you can smell the great fresh air. We learn more about the nature around us. I would like to do this because it is a time to relax. This relates to the story because the mole has done a spring clean of his home/habitat and maybe wants to relax.
