6Red Maths Week

What a way to start Autumn 2 – a week full of Mathematical challenges, with a competitive edge. Working as a team, we have been collecting crystals for our resilience, teamwork and application of Maths. We have travelled the world and looked at the Maths and famous Mathematicians from Greece, Egypt, India and China. Who would have thought that theories discovered thousands of years ago would still be used in teaching today? There have been activities which have made us all think. But, we have learnt the art of self belief and realised that if we are struggling, this is when we are learning the most.

We have had lots of challenges thrown our way today! We started the day investigating geometric patterns. We had to visualise and idetify patterns while exploring connections between multiples. Another investigation saw us explore whether there are an infinite number of primes. All of this stems from ideas and theories from Greek Mathematicians.
There has been an amazing learning buzz in the classroom.
Challenge: Can you explain why Greece is so important in Mathematics?

Today, our Maths took us to Egypt! We looked at hieroglyphics and solved problems with symbols and not numbers. We then moved on to looking at the volume of pyramids – did you know, the volume of a pyramid is 1/3 of a cube with the same base and height? We constructed our own cubes made from pyramids to prove this – turns out, it’s right!
Our biggest challenge of the day was working out fractions ‘The Egyptian Way’ – they only work with unit fractions. But, working as a team, we managed to solve the problem!

Today, we travelled all the way to India to explore Indian mathematicians. We researched and created double page spread about Indian mathematician Brahmagupta. Using our knowledge of shapes, we made our own 3 Dimensional growth patterns. Our todays’s challenge was to position the numbers so that every circle adds up to zero.

Greece is important in mathematics because they are the ones who “created maths” and had so many mathematicians such as, Pythagoras and Euclid.

This week I liked doing the challenge and lots of people were competitive which was fun. And the video was good.
