6W 20/5 – Wind in the Willows

Hi year 6,

Today we are going to start a new book and a new scheme of work; instead of focussing on our reading skills, today we will be focussing on our listening. Each of you must listen to the clip below… it is 15 minutes long but it has been read excellently and really is quite enjoyable. You need to listen to Episode 1.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks2-the-wind-in-the-willows-episode-1-the-river-bank/zffcvk7

I suggest that you have a look at the activity set and keep this in mind when listening to the extract. Find somewhere quiet to sit, get comfy and enjoy!
Today you will be hearing a lot about the idyllic setting in which the characters live and you will also be introduced to a few of the key characters.

  1. Can you name 3 characters? Give a brief explanation of what they are like. What do they look like? What kind of personality do they have?

Throughout this episode we are introduced to the main
characters’ homes and environments in which they live. These are happy,
idyllic scenes described in detail.

2. Think about how these scenes make us feel as readers. Is this a place we would like to go to or live ourselves? Identify the words the author has chosen and make a word bank that you could use to write a setting description.

Challenge – Can you create a setting description of the riverbank?

  1. 1. Mole, Badger, Water rat.
Mole is a very organized and clean character. He likes to make new friends but is very impatient.
Water rat is kind and loves spending time at the river. His hobby is rowing.
Badger is a grumpy person. He hates society and making new friends.
    2. It is a dirty place but a quiet place to live in. In my opinion, I would love to live in such a tranquil village.

  2. Mole has brown fur, likes to go on grass, he is very happy, he is small and also wears small clothes which have a bit of colour on them.
Otter is very kind to his friends (Rats), and is very helpful, he has brown fur and a thick coat.
Rat is very kind, takes time for him to trust random people, he likes roaming in boats.

    • Well done Ahmed, A good set of words to use. Can you describe the setting? Also, make sure you use your punctuation properly eg… fullstops.

  4. 1. Can you name 3 characters? Give a brief explanation of what they are like.
    The Mole:
The mole has black fur and he has a very shy personality. He lives in a hole in the ground and he seems naïve; he has not seen much of the outside world. He enjoys the river and the water and is very curious. He also seems like a very tidy person.
    The Water Rat:
The water rat is a very jolly character. His personality is nice and friendly and he is very forgiving. He lives near the river and knows a lot about the other animals who live around him. He is certain about his opinions for example he is sure that he and mole should NOT go to the land beyond the forest.
    The Fox:
The fox is a very sly character. He lives in the woods and the other animals feel that he is not trustworthy.

    2. Think about how these scenes make us feel as readers. Is this a place we would like to go to or live ourselves?
The first setting- the moles home- seems like a very tidy place it seems as if he is very weary of his surroundings and cannot stand a mess resulting his house being very tidy. We would not live live in it ourselves as it is underground, but we could visit it.
The river is described as a very nice place. With the glimmering waters it would be nice to got there on a picnic, like the two main characters. However, the water rat lives there and unless there was a little cottage near the water’s edge humans would not live here.
The forest seems like a place with a lot of life. Badgers, squirrels, foxes and much more live there. However, if we go there we would not feel very safe as there are predators that live there.

  5. Can you name 3 characters? Give a brief explanation of what they are like. What do they look like? What kind of personality do they have? Mole=he likes cleaning he also lioes rolling on a nice spring grass.he is tiny and he has brown fur never been on a boat. Water mole=he likes messing around with boats he is tiny he also has brown fur he doesn’t trust strange animals that well he likes making friends. Otter=he is humble he is kind and generous he is best friends with wster mole and he always wears a big large coat.
Activity 2 It seems like it is a dirty place but overall it is a nice calm village it would a pleasure to live there and has nice greenery so it would be a nice place to live in.

  6. Can you name 3 characters? Give a brief explanation of what they are like. What do they look like? What kind of personality do they have?

Mole is a timid character , however when it is needed he can really pluck up some courage, for example when he wanted to row the boat and e snatched the ores from rat. He is also very truthful , thoughtful and grateful because after he knocked over the boat he apologised and was truthfully ashamed and was genuinely seeking forgiveness, Mole has thick matted brownish/grey fur he wears thin wire glasses just above his prim, pink nose. .He enjoys the river life and is clearly very neat tidy and organised.

Ratty or rat, is a generous character as he lets mole join him on his boat and picnic he too enjoys river life and is very forgiving; as well as this he is a natural leader and a good humour. Ratty wears a blue baggy jumper and has a gold piercing his ear just like a pirate.

Toad is a rather eccentric character who is constantly finding new crazes; despite this is can be good natured and warm hearted. Being rich he does sort of take money for granted like his boat. He has large wide brown eyes and a swamp green layer of skin.

    activity 2

I think the settings , the story and the way its read makes us feel quite jaunty , happy but at the same time tranquil and calm. Personally I would love to live in such a happy, kind , and warming village /town.

  7. Mole, water rat, badger.
Mole likes doing spring cleaning and also he is very unpatient.
His personality is very good because he loves cleaning which means he’s very calm. The setting is very dirty and uncomfortable.
Also water rat has brown fur is small and his personality is good because he loves playing with friends. Also he is very kind.
At the end of the story the mole returns to water rat house and the mole sleeps with his new friend water rat.
Also I am very happy that we are doing this story it is sooo interesting.
    Interesting 🤔

      • Yes it is a great story. I wouldn’t like to visit that place because I do not like moles. And it would be rusty in a moles habitat. And I also do not like rats.

  8. I have listened to a couple more episodes as it was so good, I am currently at episode 5 can I describe the characters from the other episodes or just the first?

  9. 1.Name 3 characters and describe them:
a)Mole- likes doing a spring clean, loves rolling in the warm grass, has brown fur, and tiny, colorful clothes, he’s fascinated by the lovely, glistening water, he has never been in a boat before, also doesn’t know how to row a boat.
b)Water Rat- brown fur, small, beady eyes and long, thin whiskers, the rat loves messing about in boats and also like making new friends, very humble and kind, doesn’t trust many strange animals, he is kind to all of his friends and loves seeing old friends.
c)Otter- friendly, always helpful towards close friends, also very humble, he is water rats best friends, he has brown, wet fur, and a fat, large coat, always there at the right time.
2.Create a word bank to make a setting description:
    .sensible .generous
    .humble .loyal
    .kind .sociable
    .helpful .accommodating
    .bright .friendly
    .good .forgiving
    .brave .self-reliant
    .clever .respectful

  10. 1. Mole,Rat and Toad are three characters from the extract.
    2. These scenes make me feel a bit icky and disgusted. This is because in the extract it say “dust all over his black fur” which makes me feel disgusted. Therefore I would not like to live there at all.
