    Michael was not able to and not allowed to keep watch on day 1 and 2 because the channel was filled with tankers(ships that transport gases and liquids across the ocean.

    At the start Michael felt quite worried because his mother had stomach cramps that were not severe but still hurt but after his mother stopped having stomach pains he felt happy and relieved.

    I think Michael means that his family was acting unusual and weird.

    It builds suspense because we will not know what happens next unless we carry on reading

    I think the purpose of this chapter was to reflect on what Michael was seeing and doing and then expand and create suspense so that the reader carries on after being told what has happened to Michael.
