Creating tension – Literacy Lesson

Through referencing the text and using your knowledge of language, explain how the writer creates tension in the text below.

Carefully, the ancient unknown creature began to make his way to the last child. Just as he was approaching them, a clatter of noise danced around the room. Quickly, he turned to see what had happened. All of the children lay asleep in their beds, dreaming the beautiful dreams that the winged man had given them. All but one…

Frantically, splashes of light began to dart around the room. Flashes of sparkling fire swirled in the air crashing into whatever was in its path. The small boy’s body lay asleep in his bed but in his dream, disaster had struck. What was happening? Where was he going? How could he make this stop?

Within a split second, the boy’s dream-self hurtled towards the open page of his book and into his nightmare. Darkness surrounded him. Suddenly, a deafening thud shook the floor around him. As he turned, a frighteningly large creature towered over him, bearing sharp teeth and vicious eyes.
