Distinguishing between opinion and scientific evidence

The internet is fantastic! You can find information on there about any topic! However, often the information available is someone else’s opinion rather that scientific facts.

mission_to_mars_3

Here are some ‘facts’ I found on the internet which just aren’t true!!

Deoxygenated blood is blue;

The Planet Mars is red;

Coffee is made from beans;

It is therefore really important that internet research is taken from reliable sources.

Today, I would like you to think back to one of the Science questions you asked at the beginning of the ‘Body Health’ unit. Use the internet to find an answer to your question. Finally evaluate your answer to decide how reliable it is.

I think this website is reliable because the NHS is a reliable company to got to. Also the government supports this sebsite which means it must be reliable, the facts are also backed up with evidence for example they said ‘US study has proven this’.

    2. http://authoritynutrition.com/why-is-diet-soda-bad-for-you/
I think this website is trustworthy because it has facts which are true in it such as, Almost every popular sugar-sweetened beverage on the market has a “light” or a “diet” version… Diet Coke, Pepsi Max, Sprite Zero, etc. Also they have added facts and statistics for example In a study of 263,925 adults aged 51-70, individuals who drank soda were 30% more likely to be diagnosed with depression over a period of 10 years.

    3. https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130105032103AAO6sZS
I don’t think this website is reliable because anyone can write their own opinion and the py could write false facts and anyone can believe them and be wrong. It hasn’t got any evidence or statistics to back up their pionts which means it could be false.

Asthma is a common long-term condition that can cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness. Asthma is caused by inflammation of the small tubes, called bronchi, which carry air in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, the bronchi will be inflamed and more sensitive. The common asthma triggered include: house dust mites, animal fur, pollen cigarette smoke, exercise, and viral infections.

The website which I read and got my facts from was ver reliable and I would recommend the website to others as it is very acurate and efficient. The website was efficient because it was written by medical specialists. This website is not just for searching about the question I had so I would recommend this to be used in science lessons if needed to ask questions.the website is eligible and should be used in science if needed.

This website is not very good because it is not very detailed and does not talk about the main points of hoe you do get Asthma.

  3. http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/WhoAmI/FindOutMore/Yourbrain/Howdodrugsaffectyourbrain/Whatarestimulants/Howdoescaffeineaffectyou.aspx

    How does caffeine affect you?

When you drink a cup of coffee, the drug it contains – caffeine – takes effect within minutes. It then blocks chemical signals in your brain, stopping you from feeling sleepy. In moderate doses caffeine also improves mental ability – reaction times, memory and reasoning skills. It takes your body 3–5 hours to break down caffeine, which is why coffee at bedtime may stop you sleeping.

Caffeine is addictive. Even if you drink only one large cup of coffee (or three cans of a cola drink) per day, you may feel the ill effects of missing a ‘dose’. The symptoms of caffeine withdrawal include headaches, drowsiness and loss of concentration. Drinking coffee will relieve these symptoms, so it can become compulsive. Caffeine in high doses can make anyone anxious but, in vulnerable people, even one cup of filter coffee can result in symptoms similar to a panic attack.

  4. What does caffeine do to your health?
Last year, Medical News Today reported on a study suggesting that consuming three cups of coffee a day may reduce the risk of liver cancer by 50%, while another study suggests that drinking four cups of coffee a day could halve the risk of mouth and throat cancer. A study from Harvard school of medical health suggested that drinking two to four cups of coffee a day can reduce suicide risk in adults.
Caffeine can metabolise at different rates for differnt reasons. For example cigarette smokers that drink coffee metabolise caffeine twice as fast as Nina-smokers.
Caffeine keeps you awake and gives you energy when you wake up in the morning because it contains coffee beans. The website I used: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/271707.php

  5. What causes asthma?

    http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Asthma/Pages/Causes.aspx

This website is created by NHS. It’s the UK’s national health service and so the website is created by professionals; the websit is great to get information about anything medical. This is what the website said about what causes asthma:
It says that asthma is caused by pollution and chlorine from swimming pools however that’s what scientists think because no one is sure what caused it.

    http://www.sharecare.com/health/asthma-respiratory-problems/article/what-causes-asthma

This website says that you get asthma if you’re:
    1.overweight
    2.you have skin allergies
    3.you have nasal allergies
    4.you have eye allergies

I have never heard of this website before and it doesn’t show any evidence that it has been researched by an expert so it might of made stuff up.

    http://www.asthmakids.ca/about/howYouGet.php

It only says only you can get it by genes or you’re born with it and as well as the one before it doesn’t have any proof

I think that NHS is the best because it has proof and is created by professionals.

  6. 1. https://www.goredforwomen.org/live-healthy/first-steps-to-prevent-heart-disease-and-be-heart-healthy/smoking-why-you-should-quit/
This is the first website. This is reliable because it gives you all the information you need to know to not smoke. This is some information of the website. According to Docter Clyde Yancy, Professor of Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, smoking damages every tissue and organ in your body. Here’s how:
. Nicotine makes your heart rate and blood Pressure.
. Carbon monoxide and tobacco rob your heart, brain and arteries of oxygen.
. Smoking damages your blood vessels and makes your blood sticky, which is a recipe for blood clots.

. Smoking can kill you even if you don’t smoke. Second hand smoke increases the risk for heart disease by 25-30 percent and results in cardiac related death for about 38,000 people each year.

    2. http://www.nhs.uk/smokefree/why-quit/smoking-health-problems.
This is the second website. This is a website from the government because it is all information from the govement and some scientist to.
Every cigaret you smoke is harmful.

This is the third resource. This is reliable because it is a government website. It has some good facts such as smoking causes 1 in every 5 deaths in the u.k. 7. 1. http://www.livescience.com/35534-is-diet-soda-bad-for-you.html
This website is reliable because this is a science website. Usually some websites are made up from people so no one really trusts them. As well as this website says that these are 5 experts answers so that means that science experts have said this.

    2. http://t.today.com/health/no-seriously-diet-sodas-are-terrible-you-too-4B11200933
This website is unreliable because it doesn’t really have any scientific evidence. As well as lots of websites are made up by people and lots of people write that experts say this but they don’t. You shouldn’t trust websites like this because they could tell us different things comparing to what scientific websites say. Sometimes when other people type up a website then they write unreal things which could scare people.

    3. http://www.webmd.com/diet/diet-sodas-and-weight-gain-not-so-fast

This website is reliable because it includes statistics which makes it sound scientific. As well as it says that science experts have said this. Websites like this you can trust because it has evidence and it has quotes from experts. Mostly this website is about what experts have said and what the solution is.

  10. 1.http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/whatsinit.htm
I believe this a reliable source because lots of people have have used this website. Also, this website was made since 1989. This website persuads smokers to stop smoking. Additionally, doctors have agreed to this. It also tells you about smoking and what it includes inside what’s inside.

Here are some facts: Cigarettes have over 4000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These cigarettes include nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cynaide, arsenic and DDT.

    2.http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/about-smoking/facts-figures/whats-in-a-cigarette.html

I think this a reliable because it uses facts from doctors in America. It gives you clear facts and some statistics. It is quite similar to the first time because it tries to persuade the smokers by telling them what it includes inside. Here are some ingredients which are in the cigarettes:

Acetone – found in nail polish remover
Acetic Acid – an ingredient in hair dye
Ammonia – a common household cleaner
Arsenic – used in rat poison
Benzene – found in rubber cement
Butane – used in lighter fluid
Cadmium – active component in battery acid
Carbon Monoxide – released in car exhaust fumes
    Formaldehyde – embalming fluid
Hexamine – found in barbecue lighter fluid
    Lead – used in batteries
Naphthalene – an ingredient in moth balls
Methanol – a main component in rocket fuel
    Nicotine – used as insecticide
Tar – material for paving roads
Toluene – used to manufacture paint

    3. http://www.nhs.uk/news/2012/09september/pages/e-cigarettes-may-damage-lungs.aspx
I think this is a very reliable because it is from NHS. Doctors have posted and have agreed that this is true. Many people have took this information and have spreaded it on. They even made a special event to stop smoking for a month. They called it stoptober. Many people took part in this and have stopped.

Here are some facts from some of the doctors: “Electronic cigarettes could ‘damage your lungs’ as they cause less oxygen to be absorbed by the blood,” reports the Daily Mail.
The news is based on a press release of preliminary findings of a small study investigating the short-term effects of smoking an ‘e-cigarette’, commonly known as ‘vaping’. The study looked at the lung function of non-smokers and smokers with and without lung conditions.

I think the most reliable source is the NHS one because it is from Experts and doctors.

    2.http://www.asthma.org.uk/knowledge-treatment-and-medicines
This website is reliable because just like the other one doctors and health experts can put up facts on this website.
