Evolution & Inheritance (Lesson 1)

We began this half terms science unit exploring the term ‘inheritance‘.

We then explored our own inherited characteristics VS acquired characteristics.

We learnt some super scientific vocabulary to further develop our learning such as nucleus/ DNA and chromosomes (chrom o somes)

Science experiment:
Extracting Strawberry 🍓 DNA 🧬

  • First, we crushed Strawberries to their pulp!
  • We created a DNA extracting liquid using detergent, salt and water.
  • We then poured this mix into filter paper hoping the pulp would separate from the DNA
  • Finally we placed cold rubbing alcohol in the mix and held it for a few minutes.
  • Finally we extracted the DNA which looked like gooey slime!

Silver challenge: How are your inherited characteristics are different to your acquired characteristics?

Gold challenge: What is the theory of Nurture Vs Nature? (How does it link to our learning from this lesson)

    Nature is what we inherited from our parents and nurture is when you learn something that’s around you

    Nature is when your personality is natural but nurture is based on your surroundings.

    I liked it because it was not to hard and it was fun to smash the strawberries.
