As part of our science unit ‘Evolution and Inheritance’, we have been looking at how fossils are used to evidence past living things and support Darwin’s theory of evolution. We have recapped how fossils are formed and discussed whether fossils are useful when identifying adaptive and inherited traits. To support our learning we decided to create our own fossils using our craft skills. With clay, we developed prints of leaves which enabled us to assess characteristics and further discuss common ancestors. Take a look below to see what we have been up to!

Challenge: How are we able to identify if two animals have a common ancestor?

We got leaves from outside when we found a leave we went to our classroom.
We got clay we made the clay flat so we put the leave on it and pressed on it lightly.
When we finished we let it dry.

You can find out animals ancestors by extracting their DNA or if they live in the same animal group/family or to compare their characteristics.

we can identify them by taking their DNA and comparing their adaptions

What could we do regarding their characteristics though? Would two animals with a common ancestor have similar inherited characteristics?

    Challenge:
If to animals have the same ancestors we can see if they have the same traits or DNA.

Challenge we can know if it is a ansester if it has the same dna ๐Ÿงฌ

  6. Challenge :
To identify if two animals have common ancestors you would have to compare the traits.

I think that to identify if two animals have common ancestors, you would usually examine the DNA of both animals and compare.

I really enjoyed making fossils with leaves and wonder if they have common ancestors!?

Good answer about using the animal’s DNA. You could also analyse the skeletal structure and see if there are any similarities. This is what was done with birds and dinosaurs and finding out they are related.

I loved making fossils with clay and running to gather leaves to make them. I also loved squishing the clay and pressing the leaves down on the clay.
