Last night Broad Heath FC took part in their first competitive football match of the year. Against a team of experienced and older players, our group of year 4 and 5 novices had their work cut out. Even though they were very excited to play, Broad Heath started off nervously, conceding two early goals within the first five minutes, one of which was an own goal. As the match progressed, our confidence grew. Ummar (5B) covered acres of ground, making many important tackles whilst also looking threatening on the ball. Assisted by defenders Harun (4W) and Muad (5R), we managed to avoid loosing another goal for the rest of the half. The best chance of the half fell to Mubarag (4W), who charged passed a defender before shooting narrowly wide to the goalkeepers right.
From the restart, and after a couple of changes, the team continued to play resolutely. Falikou (4B) came on, and with his passing and movement he regularly troubled the opposition defence. After shipping another unfortunate goal, Broad Heath managed to conjure up a goal of their own. The scorer was Anis (4R) who headed in bravely from a corner. Other substitutes including Jay (4B), Barkad(5B) and Yahya (5W) all came on and represented the school well, working hard and playing resiliently.
Every child represented their school with pride and were fantastic ambassadors, and non more so than captain and leader Abdullah (5R). He not only produced a string of outstanding saves, but he also encouraged and supported his peers throughout the match. Thanks go to Fredrick Bird Primary School for hosting and refereeing the game, and for playing in a fantastic spirit. We look forward to meeting them in the future. As for Broad Heath, it is onward and hopefully upwards towards our next fixture.
