# Maths Wizards Year 5 Homework

Dear Maths Wizards,

I would like to you challenge yourselves. Can you work out the answers to these problems? I know you can!

Joe and Molly shared a savings jar containing £6.40. Joe took 0.6 of the money and Molly took the rest. How much did they each take?

In a competition Zara got 1/4 of the £100 prize. Billy got 2/5 and Zak got 0.3. When they turned each fraction into decimals they could see how much they each had. Find out how much. How much was left?

To have Joe’s amount you would have to do 0.6 of £6.40. 0.6 is the same as 3/5 so then the calculation becomes 3/5 of £6.40. The answer would be £3.84. To obtain Molly’s amount you have to subtract £3.84 from £6.40. That would be £2.66. So Joe would get £3.84 and Molly would get £2.66.
Zara had 0.25, Billy had 0.4 of the prize and Zak had 0.3. I know because I divided by the denominator and multiplied by the numerator. Zara won £25. Billy won £40 and Zak won £30. There would be £5 left that none of the three got.

You literally copied Anya, and changed a few words!

To get Joe’s amount you’d have to do 0.6 of £6.40. 0.6 is equivalent to 3/5 so then the calculation becomes 3/5 of £6.40. The answer of that would be £3.84. To get Molly’s amount you have to subtract £3.84 from £6.40. That would be £2.66. So Joe would get £3.84 and Molly would get £2.66.

If Joe took 0.6, then that means 0.6 represented as a fraction would be 3/5.
3/5 of £6.40 is 3.84.
To then find out what Molly receives you must do, 6.40 – 3.84, which is 2.56

This means Molly took £2.56 and Joe took £3.84

To confirm my answer I did the inverse (addition) and got £6.40

If Zara got 1/4 of 100, which is 25 (25×4=100), she received £25
Billy got 2/5 of the prize, so this means he got 40, because 1/5 is 20 (20×5=100), he received £40
Then, Zak received 0.3, which is 3/10, and 3/10 of 100 is 3/100, this means he received £30

Add them all together and you get the number £95, meaning £5 is remaining.

Zara got 1/4 of 100. 1/4 of 100 = 25. Billy got 2/5 of the prize. 1/5 of 100 is 20. Its 2/5, so x by 2 and you get 40. Zak got 0.3 of the prize. 0.3 = 3/10. Percentage is out of 100, so 30/100. A tenth of 100 = 10. 10 x 3 = 30. Zara got £25, BIlly got £40 and Zak got £30. Them added up makes £95 of £100. £5 is left.

Joe took 0.6, which is 3/5 of 6.40. I worked it out by 6.40 / 5 = 1.28. 1.28 x 3 = 3.84
If 6.40 is the total, I done 6.40 – 3.84, which gave me the answer of 2.56. To check if I was correct, I done 2.56 + 3.84 which gave me 6.40.
