Good morning Year 2,
As part of our new Maths unit this term, we will be learning all about measuring.
We will learn more about measuring on Monday.
Measuring involves many things, such as height, length and weight.
What sort of things can we measure?
We can measure time, length, weight and height. For example, you could measure your height in cm. You can measure time in intervals such as seconds, minutes and hours and you can measure weight in kilograms and grams.
When measuring, we sometimes look at items of length, to see which are shorter and which are taller. Length is usually measured sideways and heigh is measured upwards. You might measure how tall you are, or how long a rule or pencil is.
Here are some key words to use when measuring:
Have a go at home using a ruler to measure the length of some objects in cm. Which object is the tallest, and which is the shortest?
Or instead you can look at the items measured below and compare the lengths.
The water bottle is 12 base 10 blocks tall and the tin can is 10 base 10 blocks tall. Which is taller?
The ruler is 7 paperclips long and the iPad is 6 paperclips long. Which is longer?
The lollipop is 10 base 10 blocks tall and the mug is 10 base 10 blocks tall. Which is taller?
The glue stick is 7 base 10 blocks tall, the mug is 6 base 10 blocks tall and the jar is 8 base 10 blocks tall. Which is the tallest and which is the shortest?
Challenge: Can you find the difference between the tallest and shortest object?
