Miss Redhead’ s Science Club Week 3

Hi everyone,

this week we have been investigating materials which absorb kinetic energy.

Watch the video and answer the questions at the end.

What else can you tell me now you have carried out your extra research?

  1. Kinetic energy of an object is the energy it posses when it is in motion and potential energy when it is stationary. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another.
In the experiment egg was having potential energy when it was at rest. When the egg was dropped, due to its motion it was converted to kinetic energy.
On hitting the ground kinetic energy of egg and packaging material is converted back to potential energy.
Impact is higher if the kinetic energy is suddenly converted to potential energy.
Packaging material reduces the sudden change of kinetic energy and reduces the impact on egg. Parachute reduces the speed of the falling egg by introducing drag and therefore greatly reduces the impact on egg.
In the experiment ,to keep the egg safe,we used packaging material, foil, cloth and polystyrene, and it worked. It also included a parachute.
