On Thursday 10th March a group of students from year 5 and 6 went to the Xcel Center in Canley to compete in the Sports Hall Athletics Heats. There was some strong competition from Hollyfast, Cannon Park and Grange Farm, so our students had their work cut out.

The children took part in a variety of events, some based on the track like the relays and the over/under races, some based in the field like the javelin and the speed bounce. Each athlete took part in at least 2 events, and some took part in as many as 4.

For each a even, the children would earn either 1, 2, 3 or 4 points for the team depending where they came. So, the message was “It doesn’t matter if you don’t win, just don’t come last!” We had some very positive performances in the field events, especially the jumps. We also had some notable performances on the track, including Musab, the “veteran” of the over and under race, having previously competed in that event back in year 4!

In the end the school finished a creditable 2nd on the day. What was just as creditable was the behaviour and attitude of the children taking part, putting our school in a positive light out in the community. Well done to all those who took part, we look forward to next year’s event.
