Studying maps in 6S

In Topic this week, we have been studying an ordnance survey map of Dovedale and the surrounding villages which we visited last week to climb Thorpe Cloud.

Can you describe the key features of the map?

What do the different symbols and lines represent?

Can you explain the journey we took to reach the summit of Thorpe Cloud?

I look forward to reading about what you have learned.

  1. The key features are the orange lines, the ‘p’ sign, the pink dotted lines and a black box with a cross.

The orange lines represent the gradient. When the lines are far apart it means the ground is flat. However when the gradient is close it portrays that the ground it getting higher up (start of mountain/hill.
    The ‘P’ sign represents parking.
The pink dotted line represents footpaths.
On the map,the black box with a cross on top represents a cemetery.
A blue line represents a river and a yellow line represents a main road.

Our coach parked near the fourteen on the map and then we walked onto the main road, which is the yellow line on the map.We then walked on a path, which was narrow and muddy, with the river trickling besides us.The river we were walking besides is the blue line you can see just besides the main road (yellow line).Once we were at the end of the muddy path we had to conquer the stepping stones. After conquering them we were at the bottom of Thorpe Cloud. Then we followed the pink dotted line which represents pathways and they lead us to the summit of the mountain. The views were breath-taking.
Thank you for reading. By Muryam:)

  2. The key features of the map are that it has different lines and symbols also that every part of the map has a specific area in the peak district.

P stands for ‘parking’ Blue lines stand for ‘the river’ Yellow lines stand for ‘the road’ A black box with a cross stand for ‘the cemetery’ Pink dotted lines stand for ‘a path’
The orange lines are the gradient when the lines get thinner it means the land is getting taller (mountains) and when the lines get even more apart it means most of the land is flat.
    The journey we took:
Our coach parked on the road on top of the 14 on the map. Then, we walked on a narrow path which was parallel to the river. After walking on a path it came to a closing next to ‘Weirs’ we had to walk over 12 stepping stones which lead us to the bottom of the mountain beneath ‘Lin Dale’. Next we followed the pink dotted lines which lead us right to the summit.
    Thank You for Reading Haniyah

  3. In topic this week we have been labeling a map about Thorpe cloud. As a coordinate Thorpe cloud is located as (3,2).The p sign stands for parking and that as a coordinate is also about (3,2). This is what we have been learning about in topic.

  4. Can you describe the KEY FEATURES of the map?
The yellow line represented the road where car drives only, also the orange line represented if it’s flat or not.finally the blue line represented the river.

What do the different SYMBOLS and lines represent?
The P stands for Parking area. The black square and a cross on it stands for church and the pink dots stands for paths that people can walk on them.

Can you EXPLAIN the journey we took to reach the summit of Thorpe Cloud?
firstly we walked around the mountain and then we climbed up straight to reach the summit of Thorpe Cloud.
