Hello my lovely group! As discussed, please read CHAPTER 8 of ‘The Memory Cage’ tonight. Once you have read the chapter, please log into the blog and answer the following questions:

1. Look at the paragraph in the middle of page 93. ‘The damp grass … shudder and hurried on’. What atmosphere is the author trying to create?
2. On pages 94 and 95, how do we know that Mr Webb dislikes Grandad?
3. Who do you think is talking to Alex at the end of the chapter? What evidence is there to support your answer?

  1. I think the author was trying to create a damp and soggy atmosphere towards the grass into the reader’s mind.
    I can infer Grandad does not like Mr Webb because his face turned purple reddish and in the previous chapter he ripped a photo of him.
    I can infer Alex was talking to Passelworthe.I think this because it is the name of a new chapter.

    1) The author is trying to show that the place was very and tight and the nettles hurt knees.
    2) Mr Webb doesn’t like Grandad as his face turned reddish purple in the text.
    3) I think that Reverend Posselthwaite was talking to Alex because of the name of the chapter

    1. The author is trying to make the atmosphere feel wet, damp and a bit uncanny / gloomy. The author also used the phrase “ The damp grass became knee-high in places.” suggests that prickly thorns were stinging his knees.

    2. We know that when Mr Webb picked up the photo his face became purple & red which is a sign of anger and shows that he dislikes Grandad.

    3. By using my inference skills I know that Alex was having a conversation with Reverend Posselthwaite as at the start of the next chapter he quotes “How’s the family, Alex”.

    1) The author is trying to create a damp,creepy and eerie atmosphere.
    2) I know that Mr Webb hates grandad because he was snarling at Alex. The other reason I know this is that Mr Webb’s face turned reddish-purple.
    3) In my opinion, Reverend Posselthwaite is talking to Alex as on the next chapter it says “In church. 4:40 p.m . Divine inspiration.”

    1. Look at the paragraph in the middle of page 93. ‘The damp grass … shudder and hurried on’. What atmosphere is the author trying to create?

    The author is trying to make out that the atmosphere is damp and an eerie atmosphere.
    As well as this, the phrase ‘The damp grass became knee-height in places’ this phrase suggest that it was a tight squeeze between the nettles.

    2. On pages 94 and 95, how do we know that Mr Webb dislikes Grandad?
    We know that he doesn’t like Grandad as his face turned a reddish purple.
    To add to this, in the last chapters we know that Grandad ripped a picture of him so I predict that dislike each other.

    3. Who do you think is talking to Alex at the end of the chapter? What evidence is there to support your answer?
    I predict that posselwaith was talking with Alex as it is the name of the new chapter.

    1) The author is trying to tell us that the atmosphere is damp and that it was raining, the text had also said that “The damp grass became knee-high in places” this suggests that the place was very tight and nettles stung his ankles.

    2) Mr Webb doesn’t like Grandad because earlier in the chapters, the last chapter talked about Grandad finding a photo in the album about Mr Webb and tearing the photo with raging anger.

    3) I predict that Reverend Posselthwaite is the person talking to Alex as in the next chapter, it says that the person got up from where he had been kneeling.

    The author is trying to tell us it was a tight squeeze between nettles with tree roots on The ground.
    We know he doesn’t like grandad because his face turned redish purple while looking at the photo
    I believe Reverend posselthwaite was the one talking to Alex because that’s the name of the next chapter
