The rules I’ve seen is that there are signs to show, and there a traffic lights. Also, there are painted lines on the road to show where the car should drive. Pedestrians should also look left to right and make sure they cross the roads without any harm.

3 Blue discussed the new rules that have come in to place. We looked at how they prioritised those who are more vulnerable on the roads including pedestrians, cyclists and horses. The highway code now states that drivers no longer have priority at junctions and should wait until pedestrians have crossed.
On quieter roads cyclists are now advised to use the centre of the road so they are more visible.
We discussed that these laws have come in to protect road users and keep everyone safe. Some people may not like them (especially those who drive cars etc.) as they feel like it may slow them down however we spoke about how a life is more important than being somewhere a minute later.
As a class we then spoke about we can stay safe as pedestrians.

    1. Head Teacher

Well done 3B, let’s hope we all stay safe when riding our bikes.

  15. Miss Redhead

3 White have looked at some of the new rules, the most surprising one was about the loop hole with mobile phone usage because we thought that this was already a rule not to touch your phone while driving – we are glad that this is now official because we believe it very silly to use a phone while driving.
We now know that we need to check for cyclists before leaving our vehicles.
We know pedestrians have more rights when crossing the roads.

    1. Head Teacher

Well done 3W, just remember to always look when crossing the road.

  16. Miss Holland

3 Red read through the new changes to the highway code and discussed the importance of prioritising the safety of people when crossing junctions, giving space to cyclists and horses on the road.
3 Red have also discussed road safety and how we can make sure we are safe when travelling in a car and when travelling on foot.

    1. Head Teacher

Well done, you will stay safe 4B.

    Miracle – A stop sign…it stops cars.
Adam – Cars can only drive on the road.
Mustafa – Use the zebra cross to cross the road.
Dyari – To cross the road use the traffic lights (pedestrian crossing)
Yasmin – Wait for the green man (to cross the road)
Yosias – You wait for the traffic lights to turn red then you can cross at the crossing to get to the other path.
Rumaysa – When you cross the road you have to wait for the cars to stop to be safe.

    1. Head Teacher

Well done RW- you will stay safe because you follow the rules.

    The new changes involve:
    – changes to how drivers behave around pedestrians at junctions.
    – Cyclists and horse riders need to show care and respect to pedestrians
    – Cyclists get more space on roads and at roundabouts.

Even with these new rules regarding pedestrians, it is vital that we remain careful and safe when we are walking near roads. This includes looking both ways before crossing. Never running onto a road and seeking the advice from the adults we are with.

The newest high way codes was introduced 29th January 2022.
Drivers and motorcyclist give priority to cyclist when turning in or out the junction or changing lanes.
The most biggest shake up is road users have been split into hierarchies.

The new Highway Code rules urge that drivers and motorcyclists are compulsory to give priority to cyclists when turning in or out of a junction or changing lanes. Drivers are also encouraged to stop and wait for a safe distance between the cyclists at roundabouts or during slow-moving traffic or in a motorway.

The changes of the Highway Code came into forces on the 29th of January 2022.
Some of the effects of this concludes:
Before the forces came in place, drivers were allowed to have priority at junctions unless the other road user was half way across the junction.
If you’re turning at a junction and there’s a cyclist, horse-rider, pedestrian, or scooter, ready or preparing to cross, these more vulnerable road users have right of way.
The Code has been updated so cyclists, horse-riders and motorists are legally required to stop at zebra crossings if people are waiting to cross, not just if they are already crossing.
