Tuesday 19th May- 4B Science: Living things and their habitats

Hello year 4! Today in science we will make progress by considering living things and how they ADAPT to the habitats they live in. We will also think about the effects of changes to these habitats and the effect this can have on animal and plant life.

BRONZE: First watch the video and read the information about the arctic fox. How do you think this animal has adapted to the arctic environment?

How the arctic fox hunts for food. What adaptations do you notice on it’s body?

Now write a short paragraph explaining how the arctic fox has adapted to survive in it’s natural habitat.
I would like the following children to use the template below to write their paragraph: Absi, Qasim, Muhammad, Ayomide, Abdirahman, Abubaker, Archi and Bijan.

Everybody else: Please use the video, text and key words box to help you with your paragraph.

Key words: camouflage, survive, reduce heat loss, thick fur, footpads, midwinter, minus 50 degrees, sensitive hearing

SILVER: Here is some information about deserts and rainforests and the animals that live there.
1) Choose 1 animal from one of these habitats to draw. Then label the animal with adaptations it has made to survive in it’s environment.
2) Lots of animals depend on eating small insects that burrow in the desert sand. Imagine that climate change caused these species of insects to die out. What impact do you think this would have on other animals in the food chain?
3) How do you think deforestation would affect the animals of the rainforest ecosystem?

GOLD: Watch the video about BIODIVERSITY and answer the 4 questions below.

1) What is biodiversity?
2) Match each example of biodiversity to the reason we need it to help us thrive: for example, a and 2.

3) Name three species of animal that are now endangered due to biodiversity loss.
4) What do you think we can do to save animals from extinction?

The fox has adapted well to the arctic in environment because he is used to living like this and he is used to the cold weather so he will survive living in the cold

arctic fox are perfectly adapted in the -50 degree
arctic foxes have very thick thur to reduce heat loss
there fur is just so white that it camouflages to the snow
footpads are thickly fured to protect his feet and survive midwinter.

I am going to draw a picture of a frog
The impact it would have on other animals would be not good because they will no longer have food to eat and they will die.

Deforestation would effect the animals of the rainforest because lose there homes and have nowhere to live.

biodiversity means the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat
    a-2 b-4 c-1 d-3
I think its elephant monkeys and bears that are endangered because of biodiversity.
we can help animals from extinction by stop chopping down trees and stop destroying the habitats.

  2. BRONZE
The fox stays alive hunting because they have thick fur on there body. And they can ear the cold winter with their thick coat on them. Their skin is white so their predetors can not see them.

    1. Biodiversity means the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat.
    2. A and 2
    B and 3
    C and 4
    D and 1
    3. Rangatangs
    Tigers
    Sea turtles
    4. We can save animals by not using a lot of palm oil.

Artartica fox have to walk 100 miles to find food.
    They love the snow.
Artartica foxes have to hunt for each other.
In Artartica winter drops 59 Celsius down all the time in winter.
They are dangerous because they hunt humans.

    • There are a few misconceptions here Asilah.
The temperature in Antarctic drops to minus 59 Celsius.
      Arctic foxes don’t hunt humans.

Also, if your writing a paragraph, you shouldn’t be starting a new line and facts should link together using conjunctions. The simple sentences you are using are what I would expect a year 1 and Year 2 child to write. You can and need to do more please.

  4. Silver:
    1) Camels have adapted to the environment they live in(.) they have wide feet for walking in sand. They have long eyelashes and thin, slit nostrils that they can close to protect them from blowing sand. They can also survive without food and water for some time.
    2) Lots of animals depend on eating small insects that burrow in the desert sand. Imagine that climate change caused these species of insects to die out. What impact do you think this would have on other animals in the food chain?
If climate change caused these species of insects to die out it would affect other animals in the food chain and they won’t be able to find food and might end up dying. Some might have to travel really far to get the food that they want as they don’t eat other animals or insects.
    3) How do you think deforestation would affect the animals of the rainforest ecosystem?
Deforestation can affect the animals because some are used to living in the different layers of the rainforest and some even climb the trees. Also it can create pollution so it would be hard for animals to breathe and get fresh air. As well as, not enough food would be available and some might even loose their houses and the habitat that they are used to.

  5. BRONZE
The arctic fox is adapted to the arctic environment because the animal is called the arctic fox so it would love and live the arctic environment.
They have many adaptions to keep their selves warm in the arctic.
They have good hearing that they can hear if there is a object or another thing.
The arctic fox can live in the arctic erea until the weather gets to -50 degrees which is very cold!
They have fur which is so white that when a predators comes nearby the fox can go in the snow so that the predator can’t see where the arctic fox is.
    SILVER
The impact that is on the other animals in the food chain is very bad, if they didn’t have what they needed they would also die.
I think deforestation would actually effect the animals that live in the rainforest by humans cutting down their homes and killing the animals and destroying the habitat.

    • How have they adapted to keep themselves warm?

Remember to answer in full sentences, explaining how or why you know something.
For example. A Chameleon has many adaptations that keep in safe in the jungle. One of these adaptations is the ability to change colour, this helps them to camouflage themselves.

  6. BRONZE: First watch the video and read the information about the arctic fox. How do you think this animal has adapted to the arctic environment? This animal is adapted to the arctic environment because the animal is called an arctic fox so it would love the arctic environment.
Now write a short paragraph explaining how the arctic fox has adapted to survive in it’s natural habitat.
They have many adaptions to keeping their selves toasty in the arctic.
Did you know that their fur can keep them warm so that they don’t need to herbninate in the wintertime?
Also they had brilliant sensitive hearing so that they can hear if there is a predator nearby. The arctic fox can live in the arctic until the weather gets minus 50 degrees which is very cold! Their fur is so white that when a predators nearby the arctic fox the fox can camouflage in the snow so that the predator can’t see where the arctic fox is.
SILVER: Here is some information about deserts and rainforests and the animals that live there.
    1) Choose 1 animal from one of these habitats to draw. Then label the animal with adaptations it has made to survive in it’s environment.
    I will send an e-mail.
    2) Lots of animals depend on eating small insects that burrow in the desert sand.
Imagine that climate change caused these species of insects to die out. What impact do you think this would have on other animals in the food chain? The impact on the other animals in the food chain is if they didn’t have what they needed they would also die. Also it can cause a big starvation.
    3) How do you think deforestation would affect the animals of the rain forest ecosystem? I think deforestation would affect the animals of the rainforest ecosystem by them cutting down their homes and killing the animals.

    1. What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is a term that represent the total variety of all life on earth. It is immense which is a good thing as the more biodiversity the more secure. We thrive more with biodiversity.

    2. Match each example of biodiversity to the reason we need it to help us thrive.
    a -2, b -3, c -4, d – 1.

    3. Name three species of animal that are now endangered due to biodiversity loss.
Flying insects in Europe, Lions is Africa and Blue fin tuna in the Pacific

    4) What do you think we can do to save animals from extinction?
Recycle, educate, people about endangering species, not waste water or food.

    • Hi Shabaz. Just a few things to look at:
They have many adaptions to keeping their selves (themselves) toasty in the arctic.

Also they had (use the word have because the rest of your writing is in the present tense) brilliant, sensitive hearing so that they can hear if there is a predator nearby. The arctic fox can live in the arctic until the weather gets (to) minus 50 degrees which is very cold! Their fur is so white that when a predator is nearby the arctic fox can camouflage in the snow so that the predator can’t see where the arctic fox is.

The rest is excellent. Well done!

Artic foxes have to hunt for there food . Winter makes hunting hard because the snow is very deep. When Artic foxes smell food they start looking at that spot and it is not easy for them to find something that they can not see. When they start hunting they first jump very high and when they hunt they hurt themselves or they may get stuck in the snow .

    1) I have drawn a kangaroo an adaption it has made to survive is that they live in burrows and burrows don’t get too hot or too cold.
    2) They would not be able to eat and they’d die out and the animals that way them would die out to and it would continue .
3)Plant eating mammals would not be able to eat .

    • Looking at your bronze paragraph, you have not described much about their adaptions. What about their fur? Their nose and ears? Their colour?

      Elephant ,Artic fox and Zebra
      4) What do you think we can do to save animals from extinction?
      By stopping biodiversity .

  8. Bronze – The artic fox has white fur to camoflauge them against the snow, which also protects them from predators and allows them to hunt small animals for food before they are seen. To help them adapt to the minus 50 degree temperatures, they have thick fur and thickly furred footpads to keep them warm. They also have small noses and ears to reduce heat loss.

  9. BRONZE: First watch the video and read the information about the arctic fox. How do you think this animal has adapted to the arctic environment? It loves snow.
Now write a short paragraph explaining how the arctic fox has adapted to survive in it’s natural habitat.

They have many adaptions to keeping their selves warm.
One of them is the fur,Fur can keep them warm.
They have sensitive hearing so they can hear if there is a preditor near by.
SILVER: Here is some information about deserts and rainforests and the animals that live there.
    1) Choose 1 animal from one of these habitats to draw. Then label the animal with adaptations it has made to survive in it’s environment.
I have done it i will send a photo to you.
    2) Lots of animals depend on eating small insects that burrow in the desert sand. Imagine that climate change caused these species of insects to die out. What impact do you think this would have on other animals in the food chain?
It would mean that the animals wont have any food.
    3) How do you think deforestation would affect the animals of the rain forest ecosystem?
It can affect many animals because trees can fall on them.

    • Thank you Sheima. You have said an arctic fox’s fur would keep them warm, but why is it white?
Also, deforestation, you need to think a bit more about this. Remember that advert we watched in project week?

  10. Bronze
Artic fox live in a very cold habitat.
Temperature can drop -50 degrees Celsius.
They have a thick fur to keep them warm.
Their fur is also white. It helps them camouflage so no predator can see them and it helps them hunt as well.

    • Thank you Ellie. Firstly, please use full stops at the end of each sentence and don’t start a new line for each fact.
The other thing is, you say they hunt for people. This is not try. What do they hunt for? How does their fur help them do it?
