TUESDAY Year 4 ORANGE & RED GROUP – Finding Fractions of Amounts

Solve these word problems. Use a whiteboard to show your working out.

Remember RUCSAC and you will need to do two steps!

Write the number sentences for each step!

First, find the answer to the first part of the calculation.  Secondly, solve the second part of the calculation then make your comparison. 

1) If I had 3/8 of £64 would it be more than 2/5 of £120?

2) Ibrahim won £40 on the lottery. He generously gave 1/4 of his winnings to his sister and 3/8 to his son. Who did he give more money to?

3) Mum gave her two sons £20 pocket money. Sam spent 2/4 of his on a t-shirt, Dan spent 3/5 on a lego set. Who has more of their pocket money remaining?

4)  At a dog show there are 48 dogs.  3/12 of the dogs are Labradors and 1/6 are Springer Spaniels. Which dog breed are there more of?

    3/8 of 64 wouldn’t be more then 2/5 of 120

  3. 1) 2/5 of 120 is bigger because answer to it was 48 compare to the 3/8 of 64 is 24.
    2) He gave more to his son beacause he gave his sister £10 and £15 to his son.
    3) Dan has £2 more money than Sam so he has more.

  4. 1.It is false because 3 eighths of 64 is not bigger than 2/5 of 120 because they have the same answer which is 24.
    2. Ibrahim gave more money to his son because one quarter of fourty is 10 and three eighths of fourty is 15.
