What is Parliament?
How did Parliament begin?
How UK Parliament works today is very different from how it worked when it first began. Hundreds of years ago the king had complete power and could make whatever laws and rules he liked. This brought him into
conflict with other powerful leaders in England.
In 1215, King John was forced to agree to Magna Carta (the Great Charter), a set of demands which limited the king’s power. This important document details how the monarch must obey the law and recognise the rights of others. By agreeing to Magna Carta, King John had agreed to share some of his powers and therefore Parliament was born. As the centuries went by, Parliament grew into a permanent institution which the monarch had to consult before making decisions. At first, it was made up only of powerful nobles but as time went on some ‘commoners’ were also brought in. These commoners were not noble lords, but many were wealthy having made their fortunes from trading, banking and other kinds of business.
Reforms followed reforms, and over a long time UK Parliament has changed. Today it has evolved so that everyone can have a say in how the UK is run and who runs it.
