Victorian Britain in Year 5 Blue

The children are learning about The Victorians in Year 5, and have been so excited about their learning over this half term! We began the unit by ordering significant events chronologically, examining political, economic, technological and industrial growth. We discovered lots about social History, using feelings of empathy and what it would have been like to have lived through the era, thinking about childhood jobs, fashion, toys and schooling. This week, we explored the idea of migration from the countryside to the cities in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, examining the idea of ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors.

Alongside their learning in History, the children have produced and published their own poems in English, adopting the Gothic style of ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allan-Poe. They carefully considered the themes of the poem, those of love, death and the supernatural. Using vocabulary in keeping with the era and style, the children created some fantastic stanzas, capturing the essence of the genre. Take a look at the gallery below!
