Class 4 Blue Blog 19-204 Blue Making Magic

Wednesday 25th March- Home Learning English

Hello year 4! I hope everybody is staying safe and well. Yesterday we looked at an information text.

Informational text is nonfiction writing, written with the intention of informing the reader about a specific topic. … They are written using special text features that allow the reader to easily find key information and understand the main topic.

Today we will learn more about the features of information texts and identify them in 3 example texts. Here are the non-fiction books I have chosen:
What kind of information would you expect to find in each one?
Which one would you prefer to read? Why?

First of all copy this list of features into your homework book. Leave a line between each one so that you have space to write an example for each. Like this:

Next I would like you to go to https://www.educreations.com/ and click ‘student sign up’. Type in the class code WUEDNLU to join the online class! (it’s free)
You will have to make an account- PLEASE ENTER YOUR REAL NAME so I know who is accessing the work (write your username and password in the front of your homework book so you don’t forget it!)
This is an app that allows me to share video lessons with you- let’s give it a try! Please comment below if you have problems finding the video.

Then watch the video called ‘Annotating an information text’.

Here are two texts for you to annotate. Don’t forget to record an example of each feature in your homework book! (the texts are also on www.educreations.com/ if this photo is unclear on your device).

Information Text 2: From ‘The Usborne Introduction to the First World War’

Extra Challenge:
a) Which text did you find easier to read? Why?
b) Do you think these texts could be improved? How?
c) Tell me one new thing you learned from one of these texts.

Can’t find the video? Once you have created an account your screen should have a Classes button on the top bar. Click that and then click Year 4 Broad Heath. Then you should be able to see my videos like this:

  1. I prefer to read a book about Animals because and it can tell about different animals and how to protect them. Where they come from animals and how many can live so long.
I got the right code but won’t open Page on my tablet.

  2. 1) First World War :
It is all about the first world war and about the bombing of England.
    2) Building:
This book is all about building structures from time to time how buildings are constructed.
    3) Animals:
This book is all about animals and their habitats.

I choose the First World War book because I like history and I want to get more knowledge.
    Extra Challange
I found the building one easy because there were more anitations.
More anitations because there aren’t that much
I learnt what is a feature list.

  3. 1. Book one is about world war 1.
    2. Book 2 is about how buildings are changed over the time.
3.Book 3 is about wild life.
I would choose book 3 about wild life because of different animals included. My favourite animal is a tiger because they are strong.

  4. a. The one that is the easier to read for me is world war 1.
    B. It could be improved by adding bullet points.
    C. You would be called a coward if you don’t were a suit.

I can’t find the first challenge.

  5. 1] The first book is information about the world war I.
2] The second book is information about how buildings are changed over the time.
3] The third book is information about wild life.

1] I would choose the book about buildings because I like complicated/challenging things.

  6. 1] The first book is information about the world war I.
2] The second book is information about how buildings are changed over the time.
3] The third book is information about wild life.

1] I would choose the book about buildings because I like complicated/challenging things.

    Extra Challenge

1] I found the the buildings text because it clearly explained different kind of buildings and it has almost all features of a text.
2] Yes it could be improved by adding bullet points and factboxes.
3] I found out that if you didn’t wear a suit in the world war I you would be called a coward.

I did my spellings and I got 10/10.

    • Hi Rahima, no- you will need to make a new log in for this- I can see you have made one because you are on the class list! Make sure you write your username and password in your HW book. Now go to classes at the top and click ‘Year 4 Broad Heath’ and enter the code WUEDNLU. Then you will see the videos. Give it a try!

    • Technical language means words that are specific to that topic. For example in a text about volcanoes, we would find the following examples of technical language: active, dormant, magma chamber, conduit, crater.
These are words you might not know the meaning of until you have read more about the topic. They are not every-day words.

Well done for asking questions Umaiza- it shows you value your learning. On paper is fine- just keep posting a comment when you’ve completed something. Keep it up!
