Welcome to Year 5 – How to Prepare.

We Will Gain

In preparation for Year 5, we would like your child to do the following:

English
Reading – Read often, a range of texts and use reading journal questions to discuss with your child. Spelling – Spell all of the words from the Year 3&4 list and begin to get familiar with the Year 5&6 list.Practise writing – stories, poems, news reports, keep a diary etc. Practise beautiful handwriting- Grammar – Practise and know the key grammatical terms from year 3 & 4. Use the ‘games’ on the BH website to do this. CONTRIBUTE to the blog to practise this skill.
Maths
Play maths games on BH website to practise maths skills.: Count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1 000 000 Read, write, order and compare numbers up to and beyond 1 000 and determine the value of each digitRound any number up to 10, 000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1 000.Add and subtract whole numbers up to 4 digits, including using column methodsRead, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 24-hour clocks.Know all times table facts, including inverse division facts, up to 12×12.   
Physical Education
– Make informed choices to maintain your health and well-being. – Ensure you eat a healthy range of foods and not too much ‘junk’ food. Family will support you with this. – Go on family walks, runs, bike rides, frog-hopping practises etc.
Social
Group work: Look for opportunities to practise group work at home, such as baking a cake together, playing team games, or collaborating with siblings or friends on making a LEGO model etc, family card and board games, jigsaw puzzles. Independence: Give some household jobs. – Show responsibility in managing daily tasks and learning, individually and in a team Communication skills: Encourage your child’s communication skills by making plenty of time to talk as a family, such as over the dinner table.
Creative
– Sculpt something. Use playdoh, modelling clay, dough, plasticene, junk, even cake! – Make music. Use GarageBand or similar apps, instruments you have at home, or make your own instruments! – Put on a homemade stage production, following a script of your own creation or find another, with family or friends to practise your speaking and performing skills.
