Which language features have been used to capture your interest?

Darkness filled the air as disbelief struck the young boy who gazed out of the window in fear of what was to come…Soaring through the air, the metallic war planes emerged through the dark clouds,  spitting fire bombs on the land below. One house blew into flames. Then the next. Then the next. Trembling in fear he stood as still as a statue in front of the window, thinking, will it be me next? All of a sudden his ears tore when he heard a screech from behind him. His mother grabbed him and barged through doors before scurrying into the shelter.
