World Braille Day at Broad Heath

On Wednesday 4th January 2023, it was World Braille Day.

Children across the school have learnt about what Braille is and how and why it is used. Children showed great enthusiasm and it was lovely to hear that they have learnt a lot and we have raised awareness of sight impairment and the use of Braille.

Reception

The Sensory Support team visited Reception. They were introduced to a brailler and explored braille lego.

Year 1

Year 1 children learnt how ro write their name in braille.

Year 2

In Year 2, they wrote their names in dot matrixes to represent the raised dots in braille. They also did a brief history of braille and watched a video about sight impairment.

Year 3

Year 3 explored the braille books after reading their own books. They looked at the alphabet and wrote their names along with messages to each other to try and crack the code. They really enjoyed it!

Year 4 looked at the braille books and discussed what braille was and why/who used it.  They looked at a braille writer and typed a message.  The children then used letters from the alphabet to write their own message on a whiteboard.
