Children return to school Mon 8th April

Hi Year 1,

Today we are going to have another look at our addition and subtraction fact families. Yesterday we used part-whole models. Today we are using the bar model. Addition is the opposite of subtraction. We call this the ‘inverse’. We can use the same 3 numbers to create 2 addition calculations and 2 subtraction calculations.

Please watch the lesson below:

THINGS TO REMEMBER
*Only use the 3 numbers you are given.
*When adding, it doesn’t matter which way round the numbers go BUT the answer must be the biggest number.
*When subtracting, the biggest number must ALWAYS come first.

Now try the challenge below:

How do you know?

RED GROUP

The bar model answer is false because we always have the biggest number first in subtraction. So it can be 9+6=15 or 15-6=9.
The bar model answer is 9-6=3.

  7. Aiza B.

    I already sent my work.

  8. Ilyas K.

The bar model answer is false.
    9-6 = 3 not 15

When subtracting we use the big number to start.

    9+6 = 15
