Y4B – Tuesday 5th May – English

Today we are going to carry on with our poetry theme and try to write our own poem, or for some, parts of a poem. First watch poet Simon Mole and complete the activity he does. This will help you when it comes to your challenges.

Bronze:
Now, instead of using the word ‘Mole’ as you did with Simon, you are going to pick a new word (your ROOT WORD). You need to choose one that is easy to rhyme so it makes your job easier. Here are some suggestions for root words, but you can choose whatever word you like:
*Snake
*Slide
*Tudor
*Light
*Green

Now, like in Simon’s video, spend 5 minutes writing down all the rhyming words you can think of. Remember, they must end with the same sound, not the same spelling.

Silver:
Using your root word and the words you collected that rhyme, write 4 lines of a poem, ensuring that they end words rhyme and make sense.

My example:
Learning about King Henry VIII is interesting,
He is infamous for being a very different king.
He is known because he did curious things,
He married many times and liked beheadings.

Gold:
Choose another root words and complete the bronze challenge again for that word. Use these two sets of rhyming words (the words from silver and the new ones) to complete 2 verses of a poem following the rhyming scheme AABB.

My example using the work from silver and the new rhyming words:
Learning about King Henry VIII is interesting,
He is infamous for being a very different king.
He had a wife, the most beautiful Queen,
But is she the best he had ever seen?

He is known because he did curious things,
He married many times and liked beheadings.
He truly is the greediest king there has been,
And to be honest, he was incredibly mean.

Please take note that the lines are roughly the same length and also look at the punctuation. 1st Rhyme A + a comma. 2nd Rhyme A + a full stop.

  9. Hi 4 Blue.
I have been reading the poems you have been sending in. Well done for giving them a go, but overall they are far too simple. 3-5 words a line is not enough.
Try to think about telling a story. Also, don’t use words because they rhyme but because it is effective.
Please put a little more thought into your poems and make them fantastic rather than OK.

    • Hi Rayyan. I have received it and replied with some feedback. You need to be a bit more thoughtful about your poem. Don’t use words because they rhyme, use them for effect.

  10. Bronze
    Green,screen,scene,bean,seen,lean,queen,between,sixteen,machine,fifteen,unseen,Halloween,magazine.

    Silver
    There was a queen,
    She was sixteen.
    She saw a screen,
    So she had a lean.

    Gold
    Head,lead,spread,dead,said,bread,dread,fed,red,bread,ahead.

    There was a queen,
    Who was sixteen.
    She ate red bread,
    And built a shed.

    She saw a screen,
    So she had a lean.
    She bumped her head,
    Which meant she bled.

    • This is perhaps a little simple and doesn’t really make much sense. Saw a screen, had a lean. I don’t really know what that means.
Some improvements are needed. We will be editing tomorrow.

    Lake
    Silver:
There was a snake taking a break in a lake,
Later the snake was making a cake,
Soon people came to take the snakes cake,
So the snake had to bake another cake.

    • Hahaha. Your poem is like a tongue twister with all those ‘ake’ words. Tomorrow, you will need to edit it, adding figurative language to add some imagery so keep this for tomorrow. Also, you could have a go at the gold challenge now.

      • Gold:
There was a snake in a lake taking a break,
Later the snake was making a cake,
Soon people came to take the snakes cake,
So the snake had to bake another cake.

Later on snake had finished baking a cake,
He was taking a break in the lake,
So people quickly took the snakes cake,
And then he had to bake another cake.

  15. Bronze
    My root word is blue.
    These are my rhyming words
Drew, grew, who, glue, boo, you, flew.

    Silver
There once was a boy named Drew,
Who was obsessed with the colour blue.
Amazingly everyday, he grew and grew,
Until one day he took off and flew.

    • I love it Noah! Tomorrow, you will need to edit it, adding figurative language to add imagery, so keep this written down somewhere.
P.S. I bet you had the word poo in your list of words that rhymed with blue and your Mum wouldn’t let you add it! 😂

  16. Bronze
Snake- ache, bake, Blake, brake, break, cake, make, rake, shake, sake, take, wake, steak, lake, fake, flake.
    Silver
    There’s a snake,
    In a lake.
    Taking a shake,
    With an ache.
    Gold
    Slide- lied cried tried died
    There’s a snake,
    In a lake.
    Who lied ,
    And cried.

    Taking a shake,
    With an ache.
    He tried ,
    And died.

    • I like your poem, but it is a little simple. Tomorrow, you will need to edit it, adding figurative language which might mean you need to make each line longer.
