6W – 22/5 – The importance of sports within Japan

This year, the 2020 olympics are supposed to take place in Tokyo (Japan’s capital). As we are learning about Japan for our topic I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to learn about the role of sports within Japanese society.

I would like you to research three traditional Japanese sports, for example: Sumo, Jujitsu or Judo.

For each of your traditional sports you must look at it’s history, researching:

  • When was the sport created? By Whom?
  • 3 key events in it’s history
  • Is the sport still popular today, why?

I would then like you to research at least 2 sports that Japan are currently successful in. Please explain how Japan are successful in the given sport. Have they won 3 olympic gold medals in swimming etc?

You can display this information in whichever form you like, that may be a video presentation, a leaflet, or some informative paragraphs in the comments below!

There are many different sports that Japan have made an impact on that you might like to write about too! This is an independent research task but I have added some interesting videos below!

You must send in your work to y6upload@broadheath.coventry.sch.uk

    Task 1:
    Sumo:
Sumo is known to have started over 2000 years ago during the Heian period, which is from 794 to 1192. Families started going to watch Sumo as a form of entertainment. However the first professional sumo wrestlers came in the Edo period, which is from 1603 to 1868. It is not certain about who created summo due to how old it is, however, sumo was used in Shinto rituals during the Yayoi period. The sumo was used to entertain the gods or to summon kami of spirits to be fought. Did you know that sumo is the world’s oldest organized sport? Also, the word sumo is written with the Chinese letters for mutual bruising. Sumo wrestling is still popular today and for any tourists, Sumo wrestling is a “must-see”.
    Judo:
Judo was first invented in 1882 by Kano Jigoro Shihanendo. This sport became an official olympic sport in 1964. It was made by combining Jujitsu with mental discipline. Judo means a gentle way; it is called this because it is gentle at the same time dynamic in activity. The ju in jujitsu also means gentle. Judo has been practised by over five million people, so therefore it is still popular.
    Kendo:
Kendo was created by Naganuma in 1711. It is known to mean: way of the sword, sword path and sword way. Some people think of Kendo a bit like fencing (it is an adapted form of fencing). However, Kendo uses split-bamboo weapons known as Shinai while fencing usually uses metal weapons. Kendo is a martial art that usually develops strong cardio, explosive strength, and helps to strengthen your hamstrings, biceps, shoulders, tris, and chest. The history of Kendo is not too certain; some say that Kendo came from China to Japan over 1,000 years ago while others say that this sport is Japan’s own form of fencing. Over six million people practise Kendo and a third of that is in Japan. So this means that Kendo is still popular.

    Task 2:
Japan is very successful in Judo. They have won the most Olympic Gold Medals in Judo. It is not a shock though as it is their own sport. Another sport that Japan is successful in is baseball. Japan call baseball their national sport, even though, Japan has no official national sport (not even Judo, Sumo or Kendo)!

Sumo was started about 2,000 years ago. Sumo wrestling 🤼‍♂️ is made by Emperor Suisin. Tiaho Tiaho is the number one legend sumo wrestler. I think sumo wrestling would not be the same because it’s lockdown 🔐 so there wouldn’t be any matches going on. Baseball, Association football, golf, tennis and sumo wrestling are very popular in Japan. Baseball is there most popular number 1 sport in Japan. Kosuke Hagino has won a gold medal in summer olympics 2016.
