Telling the time to 5 minutes
Caterpillars – To learn to tell the time to the nearest half an hour Watch the video then answer the questions at the bottom of the blog
To prepare us for today’s learning I want you to start off counting in 5s. Stop when you get to 60.
Each time the minute hand (long) hand points to a big number around the clock time has moved forward 5 minutes.
Practise using your clock. Move the minute hand round the clock, stopping at each number and counting in 5’s as you go.
- How many minutes are there in 1 hour?
- How many minutes are there in half an hour?
The yellow side shows “minutes past the hour”. The blue side of the clock shows “minutes to the hour”.
Your fraction knowledge is also useful here. When the minute hand points to the 3 it is quarter past. When it reached the 6 the time is now half past, and when it reaches the 9 it is quarter to.
What time is shown on the clocks below?
