Children return to school Mon 8th April

BRONZE: A plant’s roots are 12cm deep underground. The stem on top is 14cm tall. What is the length plant altogether?

SILVER: Convert the height of the different trees into metres. Remember there are 100cm in a metre.

GOLD: 1. I have 2 square shaped allotments. Allotment one is 8m long and allotment two is 12m long. What is the perimeter of each allotment. What is the difference in perimeter of the allotments. 2. I am going to build a wooden fence around allotment two. It cost £8 per metre of wood. How much would it cost to buy the wood for the whole fence? The wood goes on sale and is reduced to £5 per metre. How much will it cost if I buy it now? How much money will I save?

PLATINUM: Drawings of different sized allotments have been given to a gardener.  He needs to know which allotment will fit the type of tree.  Can you help him by calculating the perimeter of each enclosure? Write which enclosure would be suited for which plants.

Convert the height of the different trees into metres. Remember there are 100cm in a metre.

    Maple 173cm 1m 73cm
    Crab apple 179cm 1m 79cm
    Snow gum. 184cm 1m 84cm
    Cercis 165cm 1m 65cm
    Oak 197cm 1m 97cm

    Answer:
The perimeter of each allotments are 32m and 48m respectively.
It will cost £384 because 8×48=384.
The sale cost of wood would be £240 because 5×48=240.
    They will save 384-240=144

Drawings of different sized allotments have been given to a gardener. He needs to know which allotment will fit the type of tree. Can you help him by calculating the perimeter of each enclosure? Write which enclosure would be suited for which plants.

    Answer:
Perimeter of enclosure 1 is 80m
Perimeter of enclosure 2 is 122m
Perimeter of enclosure 3 is 120m
Perimeter of enclosure 4 is 100m
Perimeter of enclosure 5 is 86m
Perimeter of enclosure 6 is 48m
Perimeter of enclosure 7 is 22m

Enclosure 1 can have Maple tree
Enclosure 2 can have Oak tree
    Enclosure 3 can have Conifer
Enclosure 4 can have Pine tree
Enclosure 5 can have Walnut tree
    Enclosure 6 can have Cedar
    Enclosure 7 can have Cedar

    Bronze

    12+14=26

    Silver
    Maple:1m 73cm
    Crab apple:1m 79cm
    Snow gum:1m 84cm
    Cercis:1m 65 cm
    Oak:1m 97cm

    Gold
    The perimeter for allotment 1 8 x 4 = 40m
    The perimeter for allotment 2 12 x 4 = 48m
    The difference between the two allotments 48 – 40 = 8m
    The fence around allotments 2 costs if 1 meter costs £8 is 48 x 8 = £384
    The fence around allotments 2 after sale costs 48 x 5 = £240
    The saved money is £384 – £240 = £144

    Platinum
    The perimeter for enclosure 1 = 25+25+15+15 = 80m
    The perimeter for enclosure 2 = 60+25+25+12 = 122m
    The perimeter for enclosure 3 = 20×6 = 120m
    The perimeter for enclosure 4 = 25+25+30+10+10 = 100m
    The perimeter for enclosure 5 = 30+30+13+13 = 86m
    The perimeter for enclosure 6 = 12×4 = 48m
    The perimeter for enclosure 7 = 8×2 +6 = 22m

    Oaktree can have enclosure 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 but I will choose enclosure 2.
Pine tree can have enclosure 4.
Maple tree can have enclosure 1 or 5 but I will choose enclosure 1.
Conifer tree can have enclosure 2 or 3 but I will choose enclosure 3.
Walnut tree can have enclosure 1 or 5 but will choose enclosure 5.
Cedar tree can have enclosure 6 and 7 but I will choose enclosure 6.
All enclosures are used except enclosure 7. It is so small.

Make sure you’re completing the maths lesson daily. Ms Khan is also putting maths intervention lessons on the blog, I really think you will benefit from these.
