When he multiply the second one 3×4 , he put the answer unders ones and tens instead of tens and hundreds.
And he also multiply by 3 not 2 .

Greater depth:
Alex’s mistake was that when she added up the numbers at the end she got the incorrect answer because in the calculation she wrote 42×3 but the calculation should have been 43×2 and the answer would be 86.
