This term in Year 4, we will be learning about Fractions. To start off our Maths learning this term, we have been learning about unit and non-unit fractions, understanding the importance of the numerator and denominator in fractions.
To begin with, let’s start off with recapping what a unit and non-unit fraction is:
Unit fraction:
A unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator of 1.
Non-unit fraction:
A non-unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator greater than 1.
Remember!
The numerator is the top number of a fraction.
The denominator is the bottom number of a fraction.
Identify which fractions are unit fractions, and which fractions are non-unit fractions. Use the ‘Fractions Mat’ to help you.
Complete all questions.
Write the correct fraction for the diagrams below:
Every fraction is split into equal parts. Have a go at matching the diagrams with the fractions. Remember to pay attention to the ‘shaded part’ of the fraction. Some of them match with more than one. Why do you think this?
Challenge:
With the fractions left over, draw a diagram for each one. There are three left over in total, so you will need to draw three diagrams.
Once you have completed this, answer the questions below:
1) What is a fraction?
2) What is the numerator and denominator?
3) What is the line, which separates the numerator and denominator in a fraction called?
4) Share something you have learnt this week. Which mathematical skills have you used? How have you made progress?
