Year 4 – Identifying narrative and free verse poems.

POEM 1

The Jumblies

They went to sea in a Sieve they did,

In a Sieve they went to sea;

In spite of all their friends could say,

On a winter’s morn, on a stormy day,

In a Sieve they went to sea!

And when the Sieve turned round an round,

And every one cried, “You’ll all be drowned!”

They called aloud, “Our Sieve ain’t big,

But we don’t care a button! We don’t care a fig!

In a Sieve we’ll go to sea!”

Far and few, far and few,

Are the lands where the Jumblies live;

Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

And they went to sea in a Sieve.

They sailed away in a Sieve, they did,

In a Sieve they sailed so fast,

With only a beautiful pea-green veil,

Tied with a riband by way of a sail,

To a small tobacco-pipe mast;

And every one said, who saw them go,

‘O won’t they be soon upset, you know!

For the sky is dark, and the voyage is long,

And happen what may, it’s extremely wrong

In a Sieve to sail so fast!”

Far and few, far and few,

Are the lands where the Jumblies live;

Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

And they went to sea in Sieve.

Can you help Bob and Adhita? They are having a debate about identifying narrative and free verse poems and can’t agree.

Bob says, “Poem 1 is a free verse poem because there is no set line length.”  Adhita says, ” Poem 1 is a narrative because it is similar to a story.”

Who is right?

Using the success criteria, can you help them identify what type of poem, poem 1 is? Write a few sentences explaining and justifying your reasons.

Success Criteria – Free poem:

  • no set length
  • no set rhythm
  • no rhyming pattern
  • shows feelings and emotions
  • can include alliteration
  • creates imagery

Success Criteria – Narrative Poem

  • Uses I, He, She, They
  • describes the characters, setting, events, dilemma
  • fictional or nonfictional
  • entertains the reader!
  • uses, imagery, sounds, patterns, alliteration

  1. 1.I think that Bob is right and admits is wrong .
    I think this because bob said that it has image energy and no set line
    Abbas and priya

  2. Poem1

    We think it is a narrative poem because it rhymes,entertains the reader,uses imagery,describes the setting.

    By Layla and Rudaba.

  3. Bob is right this is a free verse poem because there is no set line length and it’s not expressing feelings in any way.There is a lots of repetition. For example the word sieve.😄😃😃

  4. Who is correct?
    I think that Bob is correct but Adhita is incorrect.
    I think this because Bob said that it has imaigery and no set line length and also its an free verse poem and follows by line by line. The poem also describe the scene by the narraters feeling.
    I think that Adhita is incorrect because she thought the poem was describing the characters shown in the poem.

  5. I think Adhita is right because there are rhyming words and patterns and it entertains the reader and it is similar to a short story and has pronouns

  6. I think Bob is right because it has no rhythem and no rhyme.This poem creates imagry.I think this is a free verse poem because it has no pronouns and no feelings.It has no set line length.Adhita is wrong because it has no dilemma and events.They don’t describe the charaters and their is no aleteration.

    For this reason i think Bob is right.

  8. I think BOB is correct because it doesn’t have no set lenghth and creates imagery.The reason why is that it has no rythem and no beet.Adhita is right it’s just that it has no dilemma.

  9. I predict that Bob is right because it creates imagery and has no rhythm.Another reason why is because it shows emotion and it has no set of length.Adhita is wrong because it doesn’t have a dilemma

    For this reason I think Bob is right

  10. I think Bob is right because it creates imagery,it shows feelings and emotions and it is fiction,it shows alliteration and it does entertain the reader.
    Adhita is wrong because it doesn’t use pronouns,it dosen’t have beat,and it doesn’t describe the event,setting and it doesn’t have a dilemma.
    I think Ahita is 23% right and Bob is 100% right.

  11. I think Adhita is right because it rhymes and it builds up imagery.It also has a beat and it kind of describes the setting.I know it describes the setting because it tells me that they are near the sea.Bob is wrong because poem 1 isn’t a free verse, even though it has no set line length.

  12. This is a narrative because it rhymes, it tells a story also it builds an imagery in your head – ( imagery is when your building the image of the setting in your head). Bob is wrong because a free verse doesn’t rhyme, however a narrative rhymes and the poem has rhythm instead. Also it is a narrative because it uses pronouns such as they, she and I and pronouns mean , that it replaces a noun in a sentence such as he, she , I and they.

  13. Adhita is right because the poem is similar to a story and it uses pronouns to replace the names E.g ElyassDaud has a banana and ElyassDaud has a chocolate bar.Instead of using ‘ElyassDaud’ all the time you could use ‘he’ or ‘his’.There is also another reason because it has described the characters,setting,events and dilemma. :P :) :D

  14. Adhita is right because poem 1 is a narrative because it builds up imagery and it has a beat.Also this poem entertains the reader.Bob is wrong because this poem is not free verse
