# Year 5 Maths Challenge

Hi Year 5,

this half term’s  maths challenges link to our rivers topic.

Bronze

The River Nile is 4132 miles long – round to the nearest 1000, 100 or 10.

Where are the coldest waters in the world? Find the location of the coldest waters around the world and identify the average temperature. Put the waters in order.

Silver

Calculate the temperature of the Pacific Ocean and calculate the temperature differences of this throughout the year e.g. the maximum and minimum temperatures.

Locate the 3 deepest oceans and calculate the combined depth of these in metres and km etc.

Gold

The Atlantic Ocean covers approximately 106,400,000 square kilometres which is 20% of the Earth’s surface, how many square kilometres is the Earth’s surface?

Good luck!

106,400,000 is 20% so if the twenty acts like a two towards hundreds then 5 x 2 is 10 (Now a hundred)
106,400,000 x 5 = 532,000,000.

Gold challenge:
The Atlantic Ocean covers approximately 106,400,000 square kilometres which is 20% of the Earth’s surface. So I multilplied the number 106,400,000 x 5 (because 20 is only a small proportion of a hundred/percenatge: my answer was 532000000 km square. To check the answer I divided 5 by 532000000 and the answer was 106,400,000.

Silver challenge:
According to my search I found out that surface water temperature
in the Pacific Ocean can vary from -1.4°C (29.5 °F), the freezing point of sea water, in the pole wards areas to about 30 °C (86 °F) near the equator. To find out the difference between -1.4°C and 30 °C we have to subtract therefore the answer is 29.6°C.

The 3 deepest oceans are:
Pacific Ocean (10,924 meters)
Atlantic Ocean (9,219 meters)
Indian Ocean (7,455 meters)
The combined depth of the three oceans is 27,598m.
To find out the answer in kilometers I converted the depth in meteres to kilometers. The answer is 27.598km.

10640000 times by 5 is 532000000 kilometres. That is the earths surface in kilometres.

21. Zeid Elmesalati

Gold:

In order to calculate the earths surface we have to times 106,400,000 by 5 as it is 20% of the earths surface.20% is equivalent to 1/5 therefore we have to times it by 5.106,400,000 multiplied by five is 532,000,000 therefore the earth is approximately 532,000,000 square kilometres.

My answer for gold was 532,000,000 square kilometres.By saying this I mean that I think that the Earth`s surface is approximately 532,000,000. I worked this out by doing a sum which was 20×5. I did this because it is stated that the atlantic ocean covers approximately 106,400,000 square kilometres which is 20% of the earths suface. I knew that 20×5 is 100 so this would make 100%. After this sum, I had to work out 106,400,000×5. Once I had worked this out my answer was 532,000,000. This is how I got my answer as 532,000,000 kilometres squared.
