Year 5 Maths Challenge

This half term we have looked at place value in numbers. We have also converted measures.
Can you take the challenge and solve these problems?
Bronze:  James is 1430 mm tall, and Jodie is 135 cm.
How much taller is James than Jodie?
Silver: Phillips Idowu jumped 1653cm in the triple jump at the London Olympics.
The winner jumped 18.39m.
How much further did the winner jump?
Gold: A factory tank holds 789435ml of olive oil. The owner decides to put in a new tank which will hold 700l. Will the oil fit in the new tank? Explain how you know.

  1. Silver: Philip jump 1653Cm and Winner jump 18.39M
    1653/100 =16.53M so 18.39 – 16.53 = 1.86M
The winner jump further than Philip for 1.86M

  2. Gold:

The tank that is new wont be able to hold the same amount because when you convert 789435 ml to liters you need to divide by 1000 so
789435 divided by 1000 equals 789.435 l.This means that 789.435 is bigger than 700 l and it will not be able to fit in the new tank

789435 divided by 1000 equals 789.435 l.This means that 789.435 is bigger than 700 l and it will not be able to fit in the new tank

  4. Gold:

I think that the oil will not fit in the tank because when you convert 789435ml to Litres you need to divide by 100and it will become 789.435L.

  5. You basically take away 18.39m with 1653cm here is a example: 7 13
    1839cm
    – 1653cm
    =

    0186cm

when you take away 1839 and 1653 the number 3 in 1839 turns into 13 and the number 8 tuns into a 7.In the example,I converted the 18.39m into 1839cm

many thanks{Ibrahim Elsafi} i have done the silver challenge

  6. Sliver answer: first you need to divide 1653cm by 100 and the answer should be 1.653 then then you take away 18.39 by 1.653 and the answer should be 16.743

    • Bronze

      1540-135 = 1405 the answer for bronze is 1405.

Gold; A factory tank holds 789435ml of olive oil. The owner decides to put in a new tank which will hold 700l. Will the oil fit in the new tank?

  7. Gold; A factory tank holds 789435ml of olive oil. The owner decides to put in a new tank which will hold 700l. Will the oil fit in the new tank?

The tank won’t hold the oil.1 liter =1000 ml.Then I divided 789435ml by 1000 which = 789.435 liters.700 liters is smaller than 789.435 liters. So that is how I know 700l won’t hold the right amount of olive oil.

  8. Bronze:
    The answer is 1460cm

    Silver:
The answer is 349.2 m I think this is wright because I answered it in my head

    Gold:
I think the answer is 789.435l I think it’s this number and I think it’s wright because I divided by a hundred so I moved my numbers two placeholders because in a hundred there is 2 place holders I worked this out on a place value grid

    • Answer the questions Shane! Well done for attempting all 3 challenges, but you need to look again at all of the questions and check you are calculating correctly, using the correct units of measure and that you answer the question IN FULL! :)

  9. Bronze-140 135 =1565
    silver-34.92
Gold-The oil won’t fit in the tank because 789435ml is bigger then 7001 so the oil can’t fit in the tank.

  10. Bronze:

James is 1430 mm tall, and Jodie 135 cm
How much taller is James than Jodie?

Answer:the answer is 1565.i know this because you need to add the measurements up togheter to get the answer.

  11. James is 1430 mm tall, and Jodie is 135 cm.
How much taller is James than Jodie?

The answer is 1565, because you add 1430 mm and 135 cm.

Phillips Idowu jumped 1653cm in the triple jump at the London Olympics.
    The winner jumped 18.39m.
How much further did the winner jump?

    silver:The answer is 34.92.

  12. James is 1430 mm tall, and Jodie is 135 cm.
How much taller is James than Jodie?

bronze:the answer is 1565.I know this because you add the units and then the tens.

  13. The oil will not fit in the new tank as the tank capacity is too small for the oil to fit in. To show this :
1 Litre= 1000 Millilitre so to find 789435 in litre, you divide 789435ml by 1000 which is 789.435 Litres. The new tank only holds 700 Litres and the oil for the factory tank is 789.435 Litres so it will overflow and not fit in the new tank.

  14. bronze
    The answer is 1565
    :) :)
    silver
    34.92
    :) :)
    gold
The oil will not fit in the new tank because 700L is way smaller than 789435ml. So there is no way that oil will fit in that tank.

  15. Bronze
1,430 millimeters is equivalent to 143 centimeters.
How much taller is James than Jodie?
    Jodie:135cm
    James:143cm
    taller is James than Jodie:143cm-135cm=8cm.

    sliver

    1,653cm is equivalent to 16.53m.
    winner jumped 18.39m
How much further did the winner jump?
    18.39m- 16.53m=1.86m.

    Gold
789,435 milliliters is equivalent to 789 liter
Will the oil fit in the new tank? Explain how you know.
Yes because the new tank is 700l and the factory tank 789,435 ml=789l, 789l>700l.

  16. The oil will not fit in the tank I know this because when converting ml to l you have to divide because if you times you make it bigger and that will make it wayyyyyyyy to big so when you divide you move to the right not the left, left is for when you are time-sing the number.
So if you are dividing 789435ml into litres the answer will be 789.435l so I don’t think it will fit inside the tank.

  17. Bronze
The answer is 1565. I know this because I worked it out in my head.

    Silver
The answer is 34.92. I used my creative thinking to work this out.

    Gold
I think it wont be able to go into the tank

  18. Bronze

The answer is 1565. I know this because I worked it out in my head.

    Silver

The answer is 1564. I think this is the correct answer.

    Gold

I think it will not be able to fit in the tank.

  19. Gold:
I think that the oil will not fit into tank because when you adapt 789435 ml to liters a you need to divide. So what I done is I drew the place value grid and I moved it 2 places to the right. After that I found out the answer was wrong and the real answer is 789.435l.
Silver:the answer is 1565 because when you add when you add 16.53 to 18.39 it equals 1565

  20. The oil won’t be able to fit in the tank. When you convert 789435ml into litres it won’t be 700l that it is incorrect. The right answer is 789.435l. I know this because when I worked it out, on a place value grid I knew I had to divide so I divided. I divided by a hundred so I moved for the whole number two place values to the right.

After I had done that, I had looked at the answer, and straight away I knew that it won’t be correct.

This is my answer that it is incorrect.

    • Bronze

The 1 stays where it is you add 2 to the 3 then you add 1 to the 5 and then you just add 5 and your answer is 1565

      1653cm 18.35m
