Hi Year 5! Are you ready to take the challenge!?

This half term we are learning about the 1960’s so I have set you a challenge about this time period and you will need to use your place value knowledge to solve it.

Investigate British singers in the 1960’s: Paul McCartney, Cilla Black, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger. Find out how old they were when they became famous and order from youngest to oldest.

Silver

The Beatles were a famous band from Liverpool in the 1960’s. What was the population of Liverpool during the 1960’s? What is the population of Liverpool now? Has it increased or decreased? By how much? Explain it.

Gold

Research the record sales for the following singers; Cilla Black, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger, using this knowledge identify who is the most successful singer. You will need to explain why using correct mathematical vocabulary. What is the difference in records sold between the most successful and least successful?

Platinum 

Research the record sales of the following Beatles songs. Make a graph to show the results.

    1) What was the population of Liverpool during the 1960’s?
    The population of Liverpool in the 1960’s was 1,384,000.
    2) What is the population of Liverpool now?
    The current population of Liverpool in 2022 is 912,000, a 0.66% increase from 2021.
    3) Has it increased or decreased? By how much?
    The population from the 1960’s to 2022 has decreased by 472,000.

    1) CILLA BLACK: sold over 435,000 albums, including 420,000 in the United Kingdom. The best-selling album by Cilla Black is the very best of, which sold over 315,000 copies.
    2) JOHN LENNON: every time money came in, John Lennon was getting a piece of it. Once he went solo at the end of the group’s run, his popularity hardly suffered. In fact, he’s sold the equivalent of 73 million albums on his own.
    3) PAUL MCCARTNEY: sold over 45,089,117 albums, including 24,933,000 in the United States and 4,660,000 in the United Kingdom. The best-selling album by Paul McCartney is band on the run, which sold over 7,000,000 copies .
