victorian money

Hi Year 5,

This half term we are learning about the Victorians. Can you complete a Victorian money challenge using the information you have been given?

Bronze: The chimney sweep has earned 4 Silver Sixpence for his day’s work. How much has he earned in total? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Silver: In my purse, I have 3 sovereigns and 2 florins. How much money do I have? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Gold: Which amount of money is higher? 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.

Platinum: Try to find out what one Pound would buy in Victorian times, and compare to what one Pound would buy today? Is a Pound worth the same now as then? Find out what a loaf of bread would cost then and now.

He has earned 24 pences because 1 silver sixpence = 6 pences so you times the amount he got (4 silver sixpence) by 6.

    Silver

She has got £3.48 because a sovereign = £1 and a florin equals to 2 shillings which 2 shillings equals to 24 pences.

    Gold

3 guinea is the most because 3 guinea would equal £3.36 but 10 shillings would equal £0.50 (10/20).

    Platinum

£1 would equal to £80-90 in the Victorian era. In Victorian era, you can get a lot of things for £1 but now you can’t get a lot of thing for £1.
A loaf bread then costed 1.4 pences but now it cost’s £2.

    BRONZE:
The chimney sweep has earnt 24p which is the same as 4 silver sixpence in total.I know this because it mentioned that he got 4 silver sixpence and I know that 1 silver sixpence is the same as 6 pence, so to get the total amount of 4 silver sixpence, I should multiply the number of silver sixpence (4) by 6 pence which will give me 24 pence. Therefore, the amount of pennies he has is 24p.
    SILVER:
In this purse, there is 3 pounds and 48p which is the same as 3 sovereigns and 2 florins.I have calculated this by working out the amount of sovereigns then the amont of florins and after that I added the 2 numbers together. To find out the amount of sovereigns,I firstly found out what 1 soverign is (1 sovereign =1 pound). Then I found out what 3 sovereigns are by multiplying 3 by 1 to get 3 pounds.
After that, to find the amount of florins,I started by finding the amount of 1 florin(1 florin =2 shillings= 24p).Then I had to find the amount of 2 florins.2 florins is the same as 4 shillings and that is also the same as 48p, so 2 florins is 48p.
Finally, I added 48 pence with 1 pound to give me 1 pound and 48 pence.
    GOLD:
3 guinea is more than 10 shillings.I know this because 3 guineas is 63 shillings whereas 10 shillings are 10 shillings and 63 is bigger than 10.Therefore 3 guinea is more than 10 shillings.

    I don’t know I think 6+6+6+6=24.

    1. Josiah A.

I think 🤔 6×4=24. wait a minute. 😳 what a waste of money 💰 I think you have given with me.

      1. Josiah A.

What you saying is wrong the same number your right ✅ and the adding a × or ÷ is fine but one of them are possible!

      1. Josiah A.

But if you get it wrong It,s fine 🙂 you just gotta remember what can possibly go wrong!?

  4. Billing Karanbir

    Silver
    £3 and 4 sillings
because every sovereign equals 1 pound and since they’ve earned 3 pounds.

    The chimney sweeper has earned 24 pence because 6 x 4 = 24 or 4 x 6 =24.or 6+6+6+6is 24 4+4+4+4+4+4is24(reapeted addition)

  6. Zahraa Y.

    Bronze
    I know that the chimney sweeper has earned 24 pence I worked this out because I know that 6 x 4 = 24 or 4 x 6 =24.Another way to work it out is to and 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 or you can do 4+4+4+4+4+4 and they both equal 24.
    Silver
    £3 and 4 shillings
I know this because every sovereign equals 1 pound and since they’ve earned 3 pounds the way to calculate this is by doing 3 x 1 which equals 3 and the way I found out that they earned 4 shillings is because each florin equals 2 shillings and if they’ve earned 2 florins they have earned 4 shillings the way to calculate this is by either doing 2 x 2=4 or 2+2=4
    Gold
I know that 3 Guinea is worth more then 10 shillings because 1 shillings is worth 12 pence each and if you can do 12 x 10 you would get 120 however for us when it comes to money it would be 1 pound and 20 pence (£1.20) And 3 Guinea is equivalent to 252 pence also known as 2 pounds and 52 pence (£2.52).
    Platinum
In the Victorian Era things were worth less then now and things were less expensive in the Victorian Era then now.In the Victorian era a loaf of bread was worth a threepenny which now is 3 pence so you could buy so much bread with only 1 pound. But now a loaf of bread would be £1.

  7. Romeesa T.

    Bronze
They earned 24 shillings because I read the answer check and add 6+6+6+6=24 6times 4= 24.
    Silver
    I have 1 pound and 2 sovereign is 1+2=3 2 times 2 =4 3+4=7
but shillings as 24 pence it would 3 pounds and 26p 1 shillings is 5p.

  8. Bakary

    Bronze
They earned 24 because I inferred that because I read all of the money the silver sixpence is 6 pence and I added it 4 times so 6+6+6+6=24 or you can do 6×4=24

    Silver
    3 pound and 2 shillings
I found this out by doing finding out what sovereign and florin is, florin is 1 pounds and sovereign is 2 shilling so I did 1+2=3 then I did 2×2=4 then I did 4+3 and that equals 7 but shillings as 4 is twenty-four old pence so it would be 3 pound and 26 pence and 1 shillings is 5 pence

    Gold
The difference between the Guinea and 10 shillings is that Guinea is 63 shillings and ten shillings is 120 shillings so the difference is 57 shillings

  9. Isah C.

    Bronze
They have earned 24 beacuse 6×4 is 24 and 6+6+6+6=24

    Silver
I think you will have 3.48 beacuse you have 3 sovereign and it will be 2 florins and that will be 3 .24

    Gold

I think it might be 3 Guinea beacuse is 2.52 pounds and 10 sibling is 120 p and pound is worth more than p that’s how I know Guinea is worth , more

  10. Ayaan M.

I di it and will bring in

In total in a day of work for the chimney sweeps is 24 I know this because if one silver sixpence is 6 pence I know that 6×4=24 and that is the total of the chimney sweeps payment a day.
    Silver
She has 3 pound and 4 shillings because since I know that 1 sovereign is 1 pound and if u do 3 x 1 it will = 3 , also that 3 sovereign is equivalent to 3 pound. I know that 2 Florins is 4 shillings because 2+2=4
    Gold
3 Guinea is more higher in value because if 1 Guinea equals 21 shillings ( in pence it would be 252 x 3 pence ) this means it is also bigger since its profit is using (its 61 shillings 3 x 21) shillings. 10 shillings is smaller because if you do 12 x it would equal 120 pence and if 1 guinea equals 252 pence it would still be bigger if it was 1 guinea.
    Platinum
With 1 pound u can buy many loaves of bread since 1 loaf of bread is equivalent to 3 pennies and if 1 shilling is 12 pennies and 1 pound is 20 shilling and 20 x 12 = 240 so u can buy 80 loaves of bread in the Victorian era with 1 pound.

  12. Aran K.

    Bronze
I know he has 24 pence because 1 silver sixpence is six pence so if you times 6×4 it equals to 24.
    Silver
You have 3pounds and 4shillings I know this because 3 sovereigns is 3 pounds and 2 florins are 4 shillings.
    Gold
3 Guenia because it is 3 pounds and the shillings are 1 pound and 20 pence.

  13. Tyson T.

    Bronze.
The chimney sweeper earned 24 shillings I know this because it’s 6X4
    Silver.I have £1.02 Because I know what 1 florin is 2 shillings and a sovereign is £1

  14. Awais W.

    Bronze
He has earned 24 silver sixpence and how I know this is because I have done 6+6+6+6=24 and I have also done 6×4=24.
    Silver
    3 sovereign = £3
    1 florin is 2 shillings so 2 florins equals 4 shillings and 1 shilling is 12 pence,12×4=48
    The answer is £3.48.
    Gold
The most amount is 3 guinea because 3 guinea equals £2.52p and 10 shillings are 12 pence each.
    Platinum
A loaf of bread in victorian era cost 3 pence and ot was alot cheaper than now.

  15. Elyas A.

    Bronze
There are 24 shillings because 6×4=24 and that means itnis 24 shillings.
    Silver
I think there are 64 shillings because 20×3=60 and if you add up to 4 like 64+4=64 that means that is 64 shillings money in the victions.
    Gold
I think it is the 3 Guinea because like 4.25£ shilling to 10 it is the 3 Guinea and it is 20

  16. Khadija A.

bronzethe answer is 24 i know this beacause 6+6+6+6=24 and I did 6times4 wich equels 24

  17. Kamil N.

    Bronze
    They had earned 24 shillings because 6 x 4 = 24
    Silver
    They have 64 shillings because one sovereign is a pound and a pound is 20 shillings so 20 x 3 = 60 shillings , and a florin is 2 shillings so 2 florins equal to 4 shillings , you do 60 + 4 = 64 shillings
    Gold
3 Guineas because 1 Guinea is 21 shillings and 21 x 3 = 63 and you’d need 53 shillings to be equal if you have the 10 shillings

  18. Seher A.

the answer is 24 i know this beacause 6+6+6+6=24

  19. Maryam N.

He has earned 24 pence in total because he earned 4 silver sixpence so you would do 4 +4+4+4+4+4=24 or 4+6=24.
If you have 3 sovereigns and 2 florins you would have 4.25£pence
    Gold
3 Guiana is bigger than 10 because it is worth 4.25£Pence
Now with £1 can buy one chocolate bar or a packet of sweets or even a packet of crisps. And in the Victorian era you could by a lot with £1 like a small amount of weeks worth shopping including bread milk vegetables.

In her purse she has £3.24p.I know this because soveriegns equals a pound each and 2 florins equal 12 pence each which would add up to £3.24p.
    Gold
