# Year 5 Maths: Friday 1st May – Fractions as Operators

Bronze: There are two methods to work out each question. Your task is to solve the questions below and find out which method you find easier: 1. Multiplying the fraction, or 2. Finding the fraction of an amount.

You must work the answer out and then justify your reasoning and say WHY. Why is it easier? Why do you prefer that method? What is difficult about the other method?

Now solve the questions below:

Silver:

Use your knowledge from bronze to solve the following questions. Hint: Use the image layout ABOVE to see how you can fill in the gaps below.

20. Lakeysha M.

I have completed bronze and silver .

• Mr Janjua

Well done Lakeysha – did you complete your reasoning?

21. Samantha N.

i have done the maths in my homework book and i found the division easier because when i wached the tutorial of Mr Iman i understood the second part more because by multiplying i found it a bit complicated.

• Samantha N.

i did silver

• Mrs Habib

Really happy that you have worked through the tasks and seeing what method you find easier Samantha. Proud of you for persevering. Well done. Keep up the good work!

• Samantha N.

Thank you Mrs Habib for the kind comment.
stay safe
hope to see you soon

Chosen these. I forgot to add that to my reasoning. Sorry.

Silver
3/5 of 25
2/3 of 6
3/8 of 5
I have chosen these because 3/8 of 5 is a operator because operators are whole numbers that’s why I have c

• Mr Janjua

No worries, I trust that you have done the reasoning element in your book. Thank you for apologising. Be careful with your vocabulary. Operators are not whole numbers, integers are whole numbers :)

24. Francesca L.

• Mrs Habib

What are you finding tricky? Let me know so that I can help.

• Francesca L.

On the timesing bit

• Miss Bhangu

Which part are you finding difficult Francesca? Please let me know so I can support you with this.

25. Bronze
25 x 3/5 = 75/5 or 15
3/5 of 25 = 75 this way is easier for this question
6 x 2/3 = 12/3 or 4
2/3 of 6 = 4 this way is easier for this question
5 x 3/8 = 15/8

2 lots of 1/10 = 2/10 or 1/5
1/10 of 2 = 5
1/2 of 6 = 3
8 lots of 1/4 = 8/4 or 2
1/4 of 8 = 2

• Mr Janjua

Well done Anis. I can see you have tried hard to work the questions out both ways :)

• Miss Bhangu

• Miss Bhangu

Superstar! Well done Farhan.

30. Mohammed I.

I did it on a piece of paper

31. Rayyan H.

I like fractions of amount better because the bar model helps me to understand it better.
Multiplying Fractions
25 x 3/5=15
25 /1 x 3/5 = 75/5
75 / 5 = 15
Fractions of Amounts
3/5 of 25 =15
25/5 = 5
5 x 3 =15

32. Shivani P.

I have completed bronze and silver . I found it a bit tricky but worked my way through it.

• Mrs Habib

Well done for persevering Shivani. What method do you prefer?

• Miss Bhangu

Well done for giving it a go! What did you find difficult?
I can help with this.

33. Luqman A.

silver:
3/5 of 25
2/3 of 6
3/8 of 5
this is because operaters are a hole number like 3/8 of 5 that is a example
that’s why I did that.

• Mr Janjua

I think you may be a little confused. Operators are not whole numbers. Think about how the fraction is being used to solve the question. Ie. what does the numerator and the denominator represent? What is the whole?

• Mr Mashford

Whole, not hole Luqman. We don’t want the numbers to fall in.
Well done

34. Keisha N.

I have done it.

2 lots of 1/10= 2/10
8 lots of 1/4 = 8/4
1/4 of 8 = 2
1/10 of 2 = 5

37. Braydon Y.

Silver,.
3/5 of 25
2/3 of 6
3/8 of 5
I have chosen these because 3/8 of 5 is a operator because operators are whole numbers that’s why I have chosen these.
